When fourteen-year-old Rose Budd came from Canada to visit her sick grandfather in England, in 1857, she found he had died, leaving everything to his servants, Mr and Mrs Jay, who believed there was gold hidden in the house. Rose also learned that Mr Reed, a neighbouring rose grower, wanted to buy Elm Lodge, as he believed her grandfather had been raising a new species of rose. Finding Rose in her grandfather’s study, Mrs Jay ordered her out of the house.
