The Door to Yesterday [1967]

Plot

Kerry Hollis is staying with her Aunt Mabel for a holiday. She comes across a wardrobe and finds it is a time travel device, but only to the years 1985, 1885 and 1785. When Kerry goes to 1785 she finds its inventor meant it to take people to the future, in 1985. But instead it goes the other way, taking people from 1985 to 1885 or 1785. Kerry starts using the device for time travel to the past, but this gets dangerous for her when she is accused of witchcraft.

  1. If I remember correctly, this story first appeared in Mandy in 1967, with the dial in the wardrobe giving a choice of 1867 and 1767. At one point, the young protagonist has to dress as a maid to avoid detection. (She has taken the family laundry forward to 1967, where she washes it at the local laundrette. A fellow customer asks whether she is a member of a dramatic society! Back in 1767, the mistress of the house is amazed at how clean the clothes are.) I remember nothing else about the story, but that incident amused me.
