Bright Spark

Plot

After a litter had been born to one of the Logan’s sheep dogs, Kay Logan begged to keep the smallest pup which her father wanted to put down. Kay called the dog Spark but as he grew older and showed no inclination to train as a sheepdog, her father decided it was time for him to go. Kay found a home for him with old Peg and was secretly training him to become a dog show jumper.

  1. This story seems to be a bit of a rip-off from an early Limp Along Leslie text serial, that appeared in THE WIZARD in the 1950s. Offhand I can’t remember which one, but it was the one in which Pal was the runt of the litter that was so nearly deliberately drowned because otherwise it would only be a burden, but was rescued at the last minute by Leslie, and went on to win prize after prize for Les at sheepdog trials. He had quickly realised that Pal had ‘the eye’ like Les’s late father’s serial winner, Skipper.

  2. I recall another serial about a sheepdog, but I don’t know where from exactly, although it was almost certainly in a DCT story paper for girls. Perhaps another member will be able to supply that information. What I do remember though is that it was called Chum. Clearly a Pal in all but name!!

      1. Yes it is. For my comment on this, please look under ‘The Goal-Scorer’ because I must have put it in the wrong place.
