My memories of Mandy are focused on the earliest years. There was a picture strip Honour among Thieves, about a young girl who travels to a big city (London?) following the death of her parents. This was set in the C17th or C18th. I remember The Dress of Destiny very well. There were also quite a lot of stories set in the WW2 home front; probably because the story writers a and illustrators would have been children or teenagers themselves at that time. It’s amazing how memories of Mandy come back after more than forty-five years!
The first story sounds like “The Courage of Honor Bright”. It is listed here.
I’ve just remembered “The Samsons (or Sampsons) Stick Together”, about a family of children forced to live with the unsympathetic boarding house owners Mr and Mrs Hodder following the disappearance of their father, a naval officer. This would have been circa 1968.
And the story about the family living in a house built to a shoe design also appeared in the early ‘seventies as well as later on. I remember an storyline where all the children caught chickenpox …
I can’t place the first, but “There Was a Young Girl Who Lived in a Shoe…”, which might be the other Mandy story you want.
The Samsons Stick Together was in the Mandy 1979 annual it was a 4 part story.
I always remember a story with an alien brother and sister. The girl was called Juella, and that’s all I can remember. I loved The Secret Life of Hateful Hattie and tried to recreate it in Drama in school, but others weren’t as committed to the project as me so it never happened. I also remember a story about a girl with an acorn necklace and it was called something like The Acorn’s Secret, or something. I also like the stories of Valda, Who is Judy Parker?, Roll Along Roma, The Outcasts of Underwood School and Little Phantom of the Opera. Also Lucky’s Living Doll. There were so many good stories!
Lucky’s Living Doll was in June.
Hi Cheryl,
The character Juella was the sister of Jonny Comet, The Pop Star From Planet X. The serial with that title appeared in MANDY 666 (Oct. 20 1979) – 678 (Jan. 12 1980). I hope this information proves useful, especially if you want to read it again.
Hi Derek,
Thank you so much for your response, and ironically, I have literally only just seen it as I was looking up Mandy stories once again.
No idea why I didn’t receive a notification before for your response, but thank you again. 🙂
Who Is Judy Parker? first ran in MANDY 1 (Jan. 21 1967) – 8 (Mar. 11 1967). However, given the rough grouping of the last four titles you mention, Cheryl, it looks as though you were reading these serials in 1972/73/74. Here are the relevant details in case you want to buy in some of the issues from 30th Century Comics in Putney. For the list of serials featuring Valda you just need to search in MANDY on this site. The titles below, as you are aware, are also in MANDY.
In order of appearance:-
Little Phantom Of The Opera 272 (Apr. 1 1972) – 288 (Jul. 22 1972) [no episode in 283]
The Outcasts Of Underwood School 300 (Oct. 14 1972) -316 (Feb. 3 1973)
Who Is Judy Parker? 323 (Mar. 24 1973) – 330 (May 12 1973)
Roll-Along Roma 361 (Dec. 15 1973) – 373 (Mar. 9 1974)
OMG Derek, another kind response to my queries which I have literally only just seen.
Thank you so much – I am hoping to locate these stories again, and yes, I was reading them in the 1970’s.
Best wishes,
Cheryl.
There are two stories in the list above, Lorraine, that I can’t access as no pointing hand appears. The first is Double Trouble (1978), the other is The Dress Of Destiny. If you get a minute can you look into this please.
Fixed now!
Thank you.
Can anyone remember these stories? I think they both date from 1967.
A young girl who was blind but could ‘see’ a lady dressed in white (as a nun, possibly)?
A teenage girl with a blind father who hoped to win a carnival queen (or similar) competition that her dead mother had won as a young girl herself. The episode I remember best is her having to entertain to tea a very demanding and rude lady visitor withiut losing her composure. (“I take only lemon.” “I’m sorry, but I haven’t a lemon in the house.”). Father is understandably incensed at how his daughter is being treated, comes to remonstrate, and trips over. Demanding lady says “Good Grief, is he blind?”, is told he is, and promptly drops her grumpy act to explain that the visit has been a test to find out whether the candidates can remain polite under duress without being doormatted. Ultimately, girl is crowned queen, regrets father can’t see her, but is assured he remembers her mother being crowned and can see it all in his mind’s eye.
I’m not sure about the first one, but the second one is Queen of the Five Valleys from 1973 (though it may have appeared earlier too): http://girlscomicsofyesterday.com/2011/08/queen-of-the-five-valleys/
I think that the first story that Jane is seeking has the title In The Steps Of The White Lady. At first the story seems to be about Pippa Gracewell, who goes to stay with Major and Mrs Luce at Sandene Hall, which had one been a nunnery. However, the Luces also take in a girl called Louise Rambert, who is blind and has recently been found in a refugee camp in Africa. The girls spend some time exploring the large gardens, and then Louise tells Pippa that she feels tired and is going up to her bedroom to lie down for a while. She falls asleep and it is during this period that the white lady appears, and tells Louise that she will help her to find the flowers, leaves and berries that will cure her blindness. This serial runs in MANDY 12 (Apr. 8 1967) – 18 (May 20 1967).
The word ‘one’, the first word in line 4 of the post above, should, of course, be ‘once’. Apologies for such an uncharacteristic mistake.
As there is no pointing finger, Lorraine, which is necessary for me to access your comments on ‘I HATE HER!’, which starts in MANDY 590 (May 6 1978), could you please provide one.
Fixed now Derek
Hi I’m trying to find a story about a nurse who tended soldiers during a war. It was in a girls’ annual in the mid to late 1970s. Might have been Bunty, Mandy or possibly Judy? Sorry but I can’t remember much more about it.
I’ve looked through the Bunty, Judy and Mandy Annuals for 1973-1979, and can’t find anything that fits. I wonder if this one is a possibility. It’s a text story from the Sandie Annual 1975:

If this isn’t the one, are there any more details you can give us, eg which war was it, was it a picture-strip story or text story, can you remember any details of the plot?
I’ve found another possibility from the Diana 1978 annual, a story “All for the Love of Lucy” Lucy is close with servant boy John but her parents don’t approve. She ends up engaged with another man and John joins the army in 1914. Lucy joins as a nurse for fun, but soon finds out it isn’t as she imagined it! She gets injured, but returns to nursing taking it more seriously. She is able to tend to John before he dies.

Lynda has confirmed by PM that it was the Diana 1978 story she was looking for. She actually went into nursing herself! Thanks for your suggestions.
Come to think of it, I don’t think they went much for war nurses in girls’ annuals. Regular nurses, ships nurses and holiday nurses definitely yes. Maybe they didn’t like showing war and soldiers in girls’ annuals.
Yes, perhaps war stories were considered to be boys’ territory (there were certainly plenty of them in boys’ annuals!). One curious exception was stories about the French Resistance. As well as Catch the Cat! and several one-off stories, they reprinted quite a few Mam’selle X stories in annuals during the 1970s. In one of these, she does briefly disguise herself as a nurse, although she doesn’t actually nurse any soldiers.
Hi Lorraine. There was a story in Mandy (in 1981) called “My father my neighbor” or something similar, where a girl named Toni Forest lives with her divorced mother, and tries to reconnect her with her former husband that lives next door. I haven ‘t been able to locate the story on the list above, so could you point out its actual title if it is indeed listed? Thank you very much…
The story you are on the cusp of remembering, Ramirez, is ‘My Dad Next Door’, which ran in MANDY 758 (July 25 1981) – 768 (October 3 1981). Toni’s surname is ‘Forrest’, by the way, not ‘Forest’.
Hi,
That sounds very familiar though sometimes stories start to merge a bit in my mind!
I’ve been working on completing story lists, I’m aiming to have all Debbie stories posted by end of next month. I don’t have complete list of stories for Bunty, Mandy, Judy & Diana yet. I have stories from the start of 1981 for Mandy but nothing passed June and I haven’t come across it in the early part of the year, the closest to that story type was Mum and Mr Harding but I’m guessing the story you want must be late 1981.
August 1981. A couple of episodes have an 8.81 mark at the bottom.
And speaking about Mandy Stories, there ‘s a second strip from October that same year called “Through the mirror” or something like that, where a girl named Karen Hopkins is cursed not to be able to look at herself in a mirror without inflicting disaster upon her family. One of the spooky stories of Mandy. Does this ring a bell? Thanks again…
The second story you are seeking, Ramirez, is ‘Mirror…Mirror’, which appeared in MANDY 767 (September 26 1981) – 778 (December 12 1981).
Thank you Derek. Do you happen to know the name of the artist too? His style is very familiar and I ‘m certain I ‘ve read more of his stuff, but I can ‘t put my finger on a name right now…
I’m afraid not, Ramirez. I did make the point a year or two back, either on this platform or on ComicsUK, maybe on both, that my only interest in the story papers from D.C. Thomsons, whether for boys or girls, is the serial stories themselves, my interest in those being absolutely enormous. I do obviously realise that the stories have to have writers and artists in order to present the stories persuasively, but I’m totally content to leave the appreciation of their skills to those people who care about such matters.
Appreciate your time and help anyway…
Thanks Derek.
Ramirez I don’t have that story but if you have a link to an image maybe me or someone else will be able to identify it.
Ramirez has given some pictures of the translated reprint of Mirror Mirror. Anyone able to help identify the artist?

I’m sure that one or more of our members will be able to identify the artist of the images posted by Ramirez.
It looks like Brian Delaney, the artist who did Misty’s The Four Faces of Eve.
That ‘s him. I ‘ve got the first Misty collection with his story but it ‘s been 3 years since I ‘ve read it, so I could tell the style is familiar but I couldn ‘t grasp the name. Thanks for the help Goof…
Thank you, Ramirez. Are you able to provide a translation of the title and the title it was reprinted in?
The greek title was “Inside the mirror” & it was printed in the girls’ weekly comic “Katerina” in 1983…
Hello. Trying to track down two stories, think they are both from Mandy 1970s/80s.
The first was about two friends – Patsy/Patty who was a sensible brunette and her flighty blonde friend, Tracey/Sharon?
The second was about a girl searching for her brother/father, travelling around cities in the UK, catching sight of him but losing him each time. There are a sad song she sang about finding him again.
Thanks!
Is this the second story?

Am checking now – thanks!
It was this one! Thank you so much. A friend said it haunted her all her life as she never got to read the ending. I don’t suppose you know where she could read it online?
It was this one! Thank you so much. A friend said it haunted her all her life as she never got to read the ending. I don’t suppose you know where she could read it online? Thank you again for solving the mystery!
Glad that this is the one. I’m afraid I don’t know of any way of reading the story online, or of any reprints other than the one mentioned in the posting on this site. As far as I know, the only way to read it now would be to collect second hand copies of the original comics. Ebay or the London shop 30th Century Comics (when they reopen) are probably the best source for this. However other contributors to this site may be able to give more help with this, or provide details of how the story ended.
Thanks. No luck on eBay for those particular issues but I’ll keep trying.
Here’s another possibility for the second story, although the location is wrong and it’s not from Mandy. It’s a Bunty Picture Story Library, No 212 “Singalong Sue”, published December 1980.
A girl and her widowed father are on an Italian cruise. She is a good singer, and often sings one particular song which her mother loved. There is an accident aboard ship, and her father is struck on the head and loses his memory. He absconds from the hospital and takes a bus to Rome. His daughter follows him, and concludes that her father is trying to find places in Rome which he and her mother visited on their honeymoon. With the help of a young Italian guitar player, she makes a living singing in cafes, and sings her mother’s favourite song everywhere in the hope that her father will hear it. She sees him several times but cannot catch up with him until they meet in the garden of the Villa Borghese, which was the last place they visited on honeymoon.

Thanks – will check it out. Really appreciate this.
Any idea as to the first story Sarah H is looking for? I don’t know, but it could be it was published around the same time as the second story.
The only one that occurred to me was Patty’s World. That has a flighty blonde called Sharon, who has a brunette friend called Patty, but I don’t think many people would call her sensible! Also, it ran in Princess Tina, Pink, Mates and Girl, but not in Mandy.
I am so happy to find this! I have so many of these comics. Love them! I was wondering if you knew of a story where there was a doll house and the girl got trapped in it. I have a vague memory of a story similar to it.
Maybe the doll house story is “The Dream House” from Tammy/Princess? Here is a link to the story https://jintycomic.wordpress.com/?s=The+dream+house&submit=Search
Also possibility is Slave to the Dolls, from Tracy, I don’t have a picture available, but the girl gets shrunk down and has to work as servant in the doll house.

Hello! I’m trying to locate a story that was either in Mandy or Bunty (sorry – I used to read both!) from around 1985 – 1987.
The first was an alien invasion/changeling story. The main character was an only child in a loving family and then one day she suddenly has a little sister. The parents tell her that the little sister has always been there. There might have been a bit of the story where she’s awake in the night and sees a spaceship landing and people going towards it – OR I might be conflating it with another story.
The second is a similar theme – a girl at a school where there’s another girl who is a secret alien and is up to no good, and only our heroine knows this, and keeps trying to expose her but only ends up isolating herself.
I’d be so grateful for any help! They were in the weekly comics, not the annuals.
I’ve just found the second one – it was ‘The Girl Who Can’t Cry’! So that just leaves the first. It isn’t any of the stories under the ‘Alien Invasion’ tag (which I just discovered)
this site is a great resource – so happy I found it. These comics were such a huge part of my childhood.
Hi Emma, thanks always nice to be help people reconnect to the old stories! The first one sounds like Little Stranger http://girlscomicsofyesterday.com/2013/09/little-stranger/
thank you so much – it is indeed! I even remember the panel shown in the listing. Such a creepy story, it made a huge impression on me, aged 8!
You’re looking for ‘Little Stranger’. Claire, an only child, wakes up to find a creepy looking small girl called Darla pretending to be her sister. A massive bright light in the night enveloped the town and caused everyone to accept Darla, who is an alien. Claire is unaffected because she wandered out of the town in the middle of the night and escaped the alien influence. I have the whole story, I believe. Used to scare me lifeless when I was 8.
I liked the story a lot too, I wrote up a more detailed summary here: http://girlscomicsofyesterday.com/2022/01/little-stranger-1976/
There were a lot of good secret alien invasion stories in these comics, they were some of my favourites.
“The Girl Who Can’t Cry” ends in Mandy #999 (March 8, 1986). “Little Stranger” was reprinted, starting in Mandy #1000 (March 15, 1986) and ending in Mandy #1012 (June 7, 1986).
thanks Ronnie.
I have just googled issue 1000 – it was the one with the celebration bangle, which I vividly remember. It was turquoise plastic and I felt very sophisticated wearing it.
The first of the three appearances of ‘Little Stranger’ was in MANDY 504 (September 11 1976) – 516 (December 4 1976), the second was a repeat in 805 (June 19 1982) – 817 (September 11 1982).
It must have been a popular story! I hadn’t realised until I started reading this site that many of the stories were reprinted.
Yes lots of stories were reprinted usually there would be more of a gap between reprints so it is a bit unusual to see Little Stranger less than 4 years between reprint.
I have a Dutch translated story that is originally from Mandy, circa #454 onwards. It is about a young orphaned teen who wants to be a nurse, but because she has taken care of her ailing grandfather all her life, her academic skills are very limited. She then finds out she can became a nurse’s assistant. The English title might be something along the likes of “I Want to Be a Nurse”.
Any takers?
Regards,
Ramon
Sounds like “The Secret Nurse” http://girlscomicsofyesterday.com/2015/03/the-secret-nurse/
Sure looks like it! Thanks!

Ramon
Hi there! I’m trying to find two stories that were in Mandy – i think summer, 1980, 1981 or maybe 1982. I can’t remember the names and it’s driving me mad!
One was about a girl who was kidnapped by aliens, and made into a pet. She had to wear an electric sock collar. Shes befriends her owner, who becomes an animal rights activist. She also discovers and makes friends with a group of ‘wild’ humans, and they plot to free all the human pets.
In ther other, a girl lives far in the future, in a world without any grass or trees. They have made it mandatory for all older people to be euthanized when they reach a certain ages, and the girl’s gran is taken away for this purpose. She starts an uprising against the regime in power to end this.
Thanks for any help!
Hi Alison the first story is The Human Zoo and it appeared in the Jinty comic.
The story was recently reprinted and is available to buy if you are interested: https://shop.treasuryofbritishcomics.com/catalogue/RCA-G0004
The second story I’ve heard of before but the title escapes me at the moment
Thanks so much!! The story was in Jinty! No wonder i couldn’t find it in Mandy. Armed with that, i am wondering if the other story was in Jinty too. The Forbidden Garden rings some bells, but seems to go in a different direction to what i recall. I wonder if i mixed them up.
Thanks so much for identifying ‘The Human Zoo’ for me! Going to check out the version on sale. I may at last know how it ended! I went on a school trip and missed getting the comic containing the finale of that story. It has bugged me for ages…
There is no comment section under “Mini-Mum! (at least on my computer) so I am listing it here” It starts in Mandy #1051 (March 7, 1987) and ends in Mandy #1063 (May 30, 1987).
I wonder if this could be “The Last Buttercup” from early 1983. I only have the first episode but the girl’s (Moira Wade”) grandmother is taken away to be put to sleep as no one is allowed to live past sixty five. All that is grown is food. I don’t know the rest of the story as I only have this episode.
‘The Last Buttercup’ appeared in MANDY 845 (26 March 1983) – 858 (25 June 1983).
Sounds like this story drew some inspiration from Logan’s Run.
Can anyone remember a story about records playing backwards, dancing in the library and the grass turning blue or something like that?
This is probably “Blue Moon Pink Stars” from Mandy Annual 1984.
Oooh great thanks, now I just need to find it somewhere!
I remember a story about a girl and her family moving to a newly built town. Everything was organised and set up for them eg the alarm clock for school, I think what they had to eat etc. Do you remember the name of this story please?
The story sounds like “Tomorrow Town” from Tammy. It ran 11/9/82-13/11/82. As it turned out, everything in the new town was too well organised and controlled. It gave the residents no scope to run things their own way, and because everything was done for them with super-technology, they started to forget how to do things for themselves and the human touch was being lost.
“Grimm Street Won’t Get him!” was translated into Dutch as “Grimmstreet” (why waste space, right?) and published in Debbie #46 (1985).
It was originally in Mandy #858 (25 June 1983)-869 (10 September 1983).
Regards,
Ramon
I am trying to remember a story. I think it was called “Slaves of the Sewing Machines” and was probably in Mandy. It was drawn by Claude Berridge. It was a racket, set in modern times, where kids are forced to slog in a sewing factory. It was run by a woman whose name I think was Mrs Leech, but I might be wrong. Our protagonist (can’t remember her name), after a night in a horrible cupboard with her hands tied behind her back for being rebellious, decides to pretend to give in while acting as a secret helper. It works for a while, but when the kids figure out her game, they don’t keep it quiet enough and the antagonist finds out.
Can anyone provide more specifics (clarification of the details, when the story ran, things like that), please?
Thank you for any help.
“Slaves Of The Sewing Machine” (not ‘Machines’) ran in MANDY 1104 (12 March 1988) – 1116 (4 June 1988).
Thank you. Can you clarify the names of the protagonist and antagonist, please?
This is the introductory paragraph at the start of episode 5, which will add some detail to the names that you are requesting, Briony.
“Susan Boyd, who was an orphan, had been tricked into working for Mrs Leach, a local street market trader. Mrs Leach also ran a dressmaking workroom in the slums, where other unwanted children lived and worked like slaves. Susan had tried to smuggle out a message calling for help, and as a punishment Mrs Leach had locked her in a dark cupboard.”
Thank you for the information.
The Slaves of the Sewing Machine is actually reprint under new name, it originally appeared in 1976 as Prisoners of the Sewing Machine. I already had a post for that so I’ve merged the new information in. I believe I have most of those episodes so if you would like scans of the story Mistyfan, let me know.

Oh, thank you very much for the information and offer of scans, Lorraine. Yes, I would love scans, please. Maybe you could do an entry on this story as we’ve now raised it so much in discussion. I find this story eye-catching and unusual for having a slave racket like this in modern times rather than the usual period piece. A similar story was “Slaves of the Nightmare Factory” from Girl II, where girls are kidnapped and also used as sewing slaves.

Hi I have been trying to find a story. It could have been in any comic or annual and either from the 70s/early 80s or late 90s / early 2000’s. I’m 28 and my mum had annuals and then I did when I was a kid which is why it could be any time.
The story is vague in my memory but I remember a kid being in hospital and a nurse or someone visiting the kid and giving them a doll then it turned out that nurse was dead or from the Victorian times or something and no one else had seen her. I really can’t remember but it hasn’t left my memory and I can’t find it anywhere!
Any help would be appreciated. My mum can’t remember.
Thank you
The description is not ringing any bells for me, but I know Misty and Jinty can be ruled out. I don’t recall a Strange Story with that description, but there are some gaps in my Tammy collection. Assuming it was not in an annual, I wonder if it was a Dolwyn’s Dolls story (Bunty)?
The story is “The Raggedy-Anne Doll” from the Mandy Annual 1985, reprinted in Mandy Annual 2002.
I do have that 2002 annual, so I can provide scans of the story in few days when have some free time.
That would be absolutely amazing!! Thank you so much. No rush just when you’re free to. Honestly thank you because it’s been niggling at me for years! ☺️
Hi Bella, I’ve sent on that story to your email now, hope you receive it okay 🙂
The raggedy Anne doll sounds very familiar!!
This has been bugging me for a while. I remember a story, not sure what girls comic it was and it was probably the 80s.
12 girls go missing, they all look the same. One of girls escapes and finds out she isn’t human. She is part of a Queen from another planet and is told all 12 girls must be merged to become the alien Queen. Life on the alien world was destroyed, the queen was separated into 12 girls and left on Earth. The girl who escaped goes back with them. They all merge and the Queen still remembers her Earth family and bids them goodbye.
Someone asked about this before, so I can provide the answer. The story is 13th Birthday Mystery from Girl (series 2, the girls’ photo story comic).
