Meg Among the Slaves

Plot:

In Victorian times, Meg Jackson applies for a sewing job at Hamble’s, the poshest store in London. She ends up at Hamble’s seamstress school, but discovers that Mr Jones the manager and his sister are cruel employers who make their apprentices work in appalling conditions. Then Meg begins to suspect Mr Jones of stealing from the store.

Plot

In 1860, orphans Hannah and Oliver Franklin come to London to find their Uncle George, but find he is deceased. Silas Grodget, a theatrical agent, finds Hannah a job on stage and she becomes a popular singer. But Grodget is an unscrupulous man who intends to make a profit out of Hannah.

Slaves of the Mill

Plot:

Jane March works in a Victorian cotton mill. The children who work there are cruelly treated by Ebenezer the overseer, his wife Martha and the nephew of the mill owner, Francis Birkenshaw. Jane tries to make the children’s lives easier, such as making warm undergarments to supplement their thin clothes. The cruel overseers start to see Jane as a threat. Then Ebenezer realises there is more to Jane when he sees a gold ring that belonged to her mother on her finger and she calls out a name while she is ill. There is a mystery here that he knows something about, and it hardens his resolve to get rid of Jane.

The Courage of Honor Bright

Plot:

In Victorian times, Honor Bright is driven out of her home village because the villagers think she is a typhoid carrier after her parents die from it. She goes to London, where she falls foul of Aunt Betsy, who runs a Fagin-style racket of training girls to beg and steal. Honor refuses to do the same and sets out to lead an example of courage and honesty for the girls to follow.

School of Secrets

Plot

Sara Briggs goes to Offshore Island, a school for children from broken homes. It is run by the sinister Miss Macey and Mr Briggs is giving Miss Macey the money for it. But Sara is getting suspicious as the pupils behave very strangely. They march like puppets and emerge from accidents without a flinch or hint of pain. Then Sara discovers that Miss Macey has a very strange treatment for her pupils and has a “great plan”.

“I’ll Look after Davey!”

Plot:

Mary Armstrong and her brother Davey are taken to the workhouse. Davey is adopted, and Mary does not trace him until three years later. She gets work as a servant at Burwell Grange, Davey’s adoptive home. She is not revealing herself as she realises the Burwells do not love Davey; they just want him so they can inherit a fortune. Worse, other relatives are out to kill Davey so they can inherit the fortune, and they realise Mary is a threat when she saves Davey from a murder attempt.

The Magic Mirror [1981]

Plot:

Something strange happens with the old mirror in Angie Durrant’s room. Angie finds herself in a different age, as a little slavey called Abigail. Another servant, Milton, cheats Lady Mirabel, the daughter of the house, and Angie gets blamed. Angie realises she is reliving the life of the real Abigail, who was blamed for Milton’s crime.

Serf to Susannah

Plot:

Lindsey Lowe and her widowed mother move to Melfort Manor, where Mrs Lowe is housekeeper to the Meredith family. The daughter Susannah gets jealous when Lindsey outshines her at gymnastics. Susannah and Lindsey learn that in feudal times, the Lowes were serfs to the Merediths. Pretending to be friendly, Susannah gives Lindsey a ring of slavery that the Merediths forced the Lowes to wear when they were serfs to them. Her plan is that the ring will make Lindsey her slave.
