Plot

Orphan Terry Martin is engaged as  household  help by elderly Mrs Cavendish. Terry is puzzled by the odd behaviour of Mrs Cavendish and her grim maid, Ellen, and by the fact that Mrs Cavendish seems to have chosen her more for her appearance than her abilities. Terry has a glimpse of a girl in the house who says her name is Cynthia, and she asks Terry for help, then isn’t seen again.
