Plot

Cathy Cooke was a girl with never a spare moment. Since her mother died, three years before, she had looked after the home, doing all the cleaning herself and taking care of her disabled father and her younger brothers and sisters. To help out the family’s meagre income, she /delivered papers and had to get up early every morning. To add to her busy schedule she had now entered a cooking contest Queen of Cooks. She was talented cook but one of the contest judges Miss Barker, was Cathy’s school cookery teacher, who hated her.

Katy Boyd was treated like a skivvy in the house and  cafe belonging to her Aunt Connie.In an effort to better herself she entered a cookery competition sponsored by Prior’s Pure Foods. The contestants had to build a recipe book with loose-leaf pages awarded for success in a series of cooking tests.

Though both her parents were Olympic Champions, thirteen year old Kate did not excel at sports. So she was very surprised when she won a scholarship to Olympus Academy, a school which aimed to turn out super athletes with the help of machines. It turns out she was chosen due to an error, but the other girls in the academy wanted Kate to stay, because while she wasn’t a great athlete, she was a talented cook.

Gerda Carr, television cook, is the star of “Distant Dishes”, a programme featuring food from all over the world. Sue Cook is big-headed, Gerdo’s over-worked, right-hand girl, organising, planning trips, and assisting during the actual programmes.
