  2. A proposed change to the artist attribution for “A Saddle for Strawberry”.

It now seems clear that this is not Victor Ramos, as I’ve since seen signed artwork posted online, apparently by the artist, which is in a totally different style.

I see that David Roach has now confirmed that the artist for Spellbound’s “Dark Days at Torloch Towers” is definitely Juan Sarompas. This made me look again several other stories with similar artwork, including a couple of Tammys that David had tentatively attributed to Sarompas. They also include this Annual story and a few DCT Picture Libraries, including Debbie #70 “Ashamed of Her Sister”.

Having pored over what I’ve been able to find that is definitely known to be by Sarompas, I think it’s more than possible that he did these stories, and suggest that this story and Debbie PSL#70 should be tentatively attributed to him.

    1. Ok, done, thank you for the information. What other stories do you think should be attributed to Sarompas? I know “The Girl Who Can’t Cry!” (Mandy) is one.

      1. Apart from the two Tammys flagged up by David Roach, I’ve not come across many serials. He did part of “Careful, She Bites” for Princess Tina/Tina, and I think that Sandie’s “Sharon in the Shade” is also a possible. I’ve also seen several PSLs, listed below.

        1. “Careful, She Bites”? Uh, is that like David Copperfield where he’s forced to wear a sign saying he bites (ulp)? Or does the story mean a dog or something?

          1. I’ve only seen a few bits of the story. The heroine is a tearaway whose mother is dead and who has been abandoned by her father. She has hardly ever been to school, can’t read or write, and lives alone in a caravan. When social services catch up with her, a local wealthy lady takes up her cause and gets her into school, with predictably abrasive results (although I don’t think there’s any actual biting). The story seems to be about her adjustment to normal life after being used to a feral existence.

Sarompas did the first part of the story, Michael Strand did the end. It ran in Tina from March to June 1973, but I don’t know whether this was a reprint.

  3. Thanks Goof, I had made the query about “Dark Days at Torloch Tower” as the artist looked so familiar but i couldn’t quite be sure who he was. Definitely has done some picture story libraries though i can’t think of others off the top of my head right now.

    1. The other PSLs that I’ve seen are:

      Bunty #351 Kathy’s Clean Up
      Debbie #160 Duncan the Dolphin
      Mandy #21 Matron Mistikk
Mandy #47 Intruder at St Jude’s
Mandy #56 Beware the Grey Guardians!
