Leila Parkes, her uncle Reuben, and her grandmother Old Hannah, were camped with other gipsies on the Manor Estate. Two village boys, Larry and Percy Waifes, had set the Manor House on fire hoping that the gipsies would get the blame, and Larry’s arm had been badly burned. Leila attended the village school for the first time, but the children had been unfriendly towards her. On her way home from school, she had found Larry Wakes fighting one of the other village boys. When she went up to stop them fighting, the other boys called her names and she ran off from them in tears.
