Plot

When Jan Rosson hears that an avalanche has killed members of a geological expedition in Emalia led by her father, she flies to the capital, Melange. She learns that her father is accused of an act of cowardice that led to the disaster. The British Consul tells her that her father has also been killed, but Jan refuses to believe this.
