  1. The artist of Wee Slavey at its beginning in 1961, and for many years, was John Leonard Higson (“Higgy”). He taught me art at Darwen Grammar School around that time (also my father at a night school painting and decorating course before the war). He was born in 1911 and died in 1987. Originally he lived in Downham and later in Blackburn. Serving in the RAF during the war, he married Hannah Hill in 1942 and they had three sons. I remember him as a very kind and patient man, unlike many of his colleagues.

    1. Thanks very much from me, Mr Hearn, for giving us this information! I for one have been trying to find the identity of this fine artist for some time.

        1. He also did the Judy serial Janet the Janitor. I hardly like to ask whether any of this story reflected his experiences at Darwen Grammar School!
