Plot

Hetty Marlowe was spending a holiday in Hamburg with her German pen-friend, Giesela Reinhardt, when floods struck the city. Hetty was separated from her friends and was rescued by a mysterious American woman named Mary Kellow, who disappeared while Hetty was asleep, taking Hetty’s passport and leaving her coat and American passport in exchange. Hetty was later taken to a reception centre for flood victims and her name was recorded as Mary Kellow. Before Hetty could explain matters, she discovered the police were looking for Mary Kellow, and that the American passport was forged.
