Linda All-Alone

While on holiday in Littlehaven, Linda Thornley discovers a cave that belonged to a hermit called Old Tabitha. There is a verse on the wall beside a skeleton that warns that anyone who disturbs the peace of Old Tabitha will receive her curse of loneliness. Teddy

Plot

Sarah Hutton is spoiled and selfish. At a Halloween party she mocks a witch, and the witch retaliates by putting a spell on her old teddy bear. Teddy comes to life, and starts making Sarah’s life a misery because of the bad way she used to treat him.

Teddy

Teddy says he will keep on until Sarah has learned her lesson. But instead he goes to the lengths of threatening to burn down the house. As Sarah tries to stop him, she trips and bangs her head on a wheelbarrow and is knocked unconscious.

When Sarah regains consciousness she finds herself back at the Halloween party. She had hit her head on the wheelbarrow at the party. The Teddy terror had all been just a dream Sarah had while she was knocked out.

Sarah is back on the brink of throwing Teddy into the bonfire before her encounter with the witch. There is no witch this time, but Sarah decides to keep Teddy and send all her other toys to a children’s home. This suggests she will be a better person in future.

The Sorrows of Laughing Anne

Plot

Anne Foster cannot help laughing when she sees a woman in a funny witch-like hat – but then she finds out the woman is a real witch. The witch takes revenge with a curse that makes Anne laugh with a loud, hideous, uncontrollable cackle. This gets Anne into a lot of trouble at home and school. When it gets to the point where Anne’s father decides to send her to special school, she goes on a desperate search of the witch to get the spell lifted.

With the help of a lady who realises she is under a spell, Anne finds the witch. The witch falls into deep water and pleads for Anne to help her, as the water will destroy her powers. Anne is tempted to laugh at the witch’s plight because it looks so funny, but resists it and helps the witch out.

The witch is very impressed at this, but tells Anne she has already broken the spell herself by resisting the urge to laugh. So she returns the favour by making everyone forget the trouble the spell caused.
