Miss Grimstyle “Grim Gertie”
History Teacher and later Headmistress
Known as “Grim Gertie” due to her rare smiles and strict rules. She is a teacher that expects students to work right up to holidays, no slacking off! But she does care about her students, as shown by her contributing to a collection for the twins mother after her accident, she also comforts Laura when she finds her upset. She may be tough on her pupils but only because she wants the best for their future. She tries to talk to Marilyn about the importance of study over boys and how she shouldn’t just settle for being a wife. She even is lenient when Marilyn doesn’t respond so well. But she is definitely not one to get on the wrong side of!
It’s not just students she clashes with, when Mr Ellison comes to the school, she is not happy with his relaxed attitude as she thinks young people need boundaries. She also has sparring matches with Mr Hadler, although when he dies she puts the most money in for his wreath. She also shows her soft side by being a big animal lover, she is very upset when her cat dies. Unknown to her the new kitten she gets comes from Jacki, a pupil she is always in conflict with
Miss Mackintosh “Tosh”
English Teacher
One of the favourite teachers at the Comp, she is nice and understanding. She is shown to be sympathetic, as she listens to Lisa when she needs to talk about her feelings about her dad getting remarried. She is also observant when something is bothering the students, like when she sees Sam is upset she sends her with the register tells her to take her time. She can also enforce the rules and be firm, she gives out to the girls when she finds out about a joke on Marilyn that could have gone very wrong.
Mr Cole “Sooty”
His first name has been listed as Dave and Stephen. He starts at the Comp as Miss Crawford’s replacement and is popular and friendly. He always supportive of the more fun ideas the class have. Lisa is not happy though when he dates her mom. It doesn’t last long as they agree they don’t have enough in common. After a ski trip, where he ends up having to pay for loads of extras, he is quite persistent in tying to get money back from Ron Hacker although he doesn’t succeed.
Mr Bartlett “Basher”
Maths Teacher
A long standing teacher. He is very strict. He also doesn’t like to back down when he accuses Sprot and Tony of copying off each other, he relents that the the 2nd time they did not copy, but they still have to do a detention for not obeying a teacher. He is also not happy with Mr Ellison’s relaxed rules, such as when he abolishes after school detentions, he feels it undermines the teacher’s authority.
Miss Graham “Goggles”
She is the enforcer of rules, in the early days the head is rarely seen, Goggles deals with ,most cases. She can be understanding though, she leaves Maureen off with warning about skipping school, knowing that she has been having a hard time. She also has a sense of humour she is amused by Hayley’s disastrous self tan. She becomes acting head for a little bit. Later she breaks her wrist on an ice slide made by Hodge and Freddy.
Miss Smith “Mad Maureen”
The class are first happy to see they have a young teacher, but it turns out she is just as tough as Basher or Grim Gertie. She has it in for Jacki in particular as she does not like her bad influence on her sister Selena. When she gets more short fused than usual, it turns out boyfriend is going to work abroad for 2 years and she is afraid they won’t last. They must sort it out though as later she shows she can have a sense of humour when she dresses up in school uniform for a fund raiser.
Mr Ellison
Headmaster
The third head is young and relaxed, maybe too relaxed! He lets the pupils call him John and even lets Pippa and Morag skive off P.E. with the excuse they wanted to study in library. He makes changes such as getting rid of after school detentions and makes wearing the school uniform voluntary. His lax in discipline is a problem when clothes go missing. He is voted by pupils to be the best teacher in school in a popular poll.
Mr Russell
Another popular teacher, he is more lenient than others. He is also considered quite handsome as some pupils including Marilyn develop a crush on him .
Miss Bliss “The Blizzard”
Miss Bliss turns out to be tougher than the teacher she replaced. She gives out little praise. She works the students hard. When Laura and the rest of the swim team win a competition she tells them they should have won be more and need to up their training!
Mr Carrington
Father of Bradley, he is not very understanding to those that struggle. When Roz does badly at maths he believes she should do better and he is not happy when he starts dating his son. He feels she is distracting him from studies.
Mr Hadler
The grumpy caretaker who often gets into fights with Grimstyle. He has lots of old war stories and often sneaks off for smokes which leads to sparring matches with Jacki. While he gives out about animals he shows a soft spot when he looks after stray cat that Lisa found. He even keeps her after she had kittens. When he is recovering in hospital from heart attack, he asks Jacki to look after his cat. Despite he’s grumpiness when he dies later, lots of people contribute to his wreath.
Others:
Miss Crawford – art teacher, she leaves when she gets married and moves away.
Miss Blake – P.E teacher, tough but popular enough that students trow her a surprise going away party
Mr Bullingham – The 2nd head, after the first one gets a stroke. Strict although he does dress up for charity.
Miss Lister – Music teacher
Mr Norman – Biology teacher, known as Gormless Norman, gets tricked played on him.
Andrew Carlton – P.E teacher, young and friendly, is the Cunningham’s lodger for a while.
Major Finch – Deputy head, tough ex-army.
Miss Morton – Student English teacher, notable for being a minority teacher that is not often seen at the Comp.
Mr Smart – Caretaker, replaces Mr Hadler, he’s younger but just as grumpy.

Wow, what a lot of work!
If you are right in thinking it was the same writer, it would not have been the first time. Jay Over wrote Pam of Pond Hill during her credited run, so it is a good bet it was the same throughout. Mind you, Pam didn’t run for nearly as long as The Comp. I wonder if the writer was also on Penny’s Place and Four Marys? A writer writing several stories at once was not unusual, as we’ve just found out on the Jinty blog.
Hi! Yes, you’re absolutely right about there only being one writer for The Comp. I wrote every episode – I think I worked out at the end that I’d done 857 episodes including annuals and summer specials. I also wrote Penny’s Place and Luv, Lisa; and while I wasn’t the regular writer of the Four Marys, I was honoured to be asked to write five stories for them in 1990 – ostensibly to “update them” for the new decade. It was fun to read the above article!
I am glad you enjoyed the article. Its very impressive that you wrote all The Comp it was such a central story of the comics in the 80s/90s and also Penny’s Place and Luv Lisa. They most be some of the most remembered stories of these comics they were great soap stories and interesting characters.
I’d love to hear more about your time writing these stories.
Do you know what the results were for the vote on the most popular teacher?
The Comp characters voted:
#1 John Ellison
#2 Sooty Cole
#3 Tosh
Readers voted similarly (I suspect that influenced who topped the poll in story!)
They were asked to give every teacher on the list a mark out of 10.
#1 John Ellison
#2 Mr Russell
#3 Sooty Cole
#4 Tosh
#5 Goggles Graham
#6 Mr Carrington
#7 Mad Maureen
#8 The Blizzard
#9 Basher Bartlett
#10 Grim Gertie
Tammy’s “No Haven for Hayley” was another serial to have rare aftermath, of sorts, of the scheming foster girl. But in this case the girl left without the mother finding out the truth about her and thinking her own daughter was to blame for the girl leaving. The foster girl’s purpose in the plot was to take the already-strained relationship between mother and daughter to breaking point, the climax (the daughter running out into the road and getting hit by a car after mum yelled at her over the fostering disaster) and ultimately the resolution. We can safely assume mum was put straight about the foster girl in the end because the nurse who spoke to her was the one who saw through the foster girl. But we don’t see mum’s reaction.
It’s Ron Lumsden, not Roy Lumsden.
Somehow had managed to write correct name in the main piece but wrong at start, corrected now!
There is an error, Lorraine, in the information above the plot summary of this serial. The new story was certainly called NIKKI in issues 1650 and 1651. The title then changed twice in the two subsequent issues. The title in 1652 (September 9 1989) was NIKKI AT THE COMP, whereas only in 1653 (September 16 1989) did the title finally become THE COMP.
I hope you and your family have a really lovely Christmas. I’m sure you will because of how excited and open-mouthed Ruby will be tomorrow morning. Just don’t let her get legless at Hogmanay!! This is the first year that Alex doesn’t believe in Father Christmas. I’m having a couple of jars with Russ in the Copperhouse tonight, and he’s going to pick me up in the morning to spend the day with him, Rach, Lois and Alex. Instead of the usual Christmas dinner, we are all having an Indian. No doubt we’ll talk again in the new year.
Thank you! Hope you and your family have a lovely Christmas too.
Thank you. If we don’t, I’ll let you know!!
At least one story run was translated into Dutch as “Klas 3M” in Peggy #3/1987. The pages were reprinted from Nikki, I am trying to sort out which issues.

Ramon
The Comp was the very first Bunty story I ever read upon receiving the 1999 annual for Christmas 1998. Afterwards, I read the story in comics from early 1999 and it was probably the most memorable Bunty picture story for me.
When I had the first Bunty Golden Age Classic Stories book, The Comp got a brief mention in it and I was surprised to learn that the story actually first appeared in Nikki.
Another occasional artist for The Comp I could identify is Claude Berridge. He illustrated the Vive La Comp! Picture Story Library story.
