The Wilsons Who Lived in a Shoe

Plot:

In Victorian times, when Peech’s Funfair closed down, the Wilson children’s father lost his job. He left for London and didn’t return. Scared of being put into an orphanage by their unsympathetic landlady, Annie Wilson and her younger brother and sister. Nicky and Sara, ran away and set up home in The Shoe, an amusement in the funfair. However, when they were confronted by the police. Nicky gave himself up in order to save his two sisters.

I’ll Bring Robbie Round!

Plot:

Becky Castle’s brother, Robbie, was competing in an athletics  event when a carelessly thrown discus caused him to fall into a coma. Becky resolved to make a taped collection of sounds connected with his favourite activities in the hope that hearing them might help him recover. Her plan aroused considerable interest at the hospital where Robbie was a patient.

Summer Holiday Swap

Plot

Much against their wills, Pat Foster and Samantha Darrel were persuaded by their widowed mothers to swap lifestyles during the school summer holidays. The change was supposed to do them both good—but Sam hated everything about life in the Foster cottage, especially babysitting for um Mrs Deane and Pat wasn’t doing much better.

A School for Susan

Plot:

After her father died, Susan Hawthorn’s mother decided to send her to school instead of being taught by private tutors. It was proving to be a difficult task for Mrs Hawrhorn to find the right school for Susan. Susan had caught pneumonia during a climbing expedition at her last school, and her mother chose another which did not allow such rigorous pursuits—Slater Hall.

A Secret Place

Plot:

When Molly Manders’ parents drowned, shock made her young sister, Katie, lose all memory of the accident. A couple named Hobson wanted to adopt Katie only, but the sisters ran away to a secret cave behind a waterfall. They were befriended by a wild boy, Colin, and later by a reporter, Bill Owen, who went to London to enquire about a locket Katie wore, which the Hobsons wanted. When Katie fell into the river, her memory began to return.

Educated Edith

Plot

Edith Anderson is an  exceptionally clever girl, but her family is poor and she doesn’t want to sit a scholarship because it would cost her parents too much to keep her at Grammar School. However, Edith’s teacher insists on her preparing for the examinations.
