After World War Ill, Britain lay in ruins and the few survivors lived like savages. Ann Jarrold’s scientist father had trained her to be a teacher and, when he died, she went to Glasburgh to start a school. General Smith, Glasburgh’s brutal leader, burned all Ann’s books and forbade her to start a school. Helped by Barbara, a twelve-year-old orphan, Ann set out to find books to replace-those she had lost.
In the year 1990, Riga Cussons is a pupil at a Special Grade School where future sports champions are given specialist coaching under ideal conditions. Riga aims to be a ski champion—Her closest rival, Beatrix Lander, proves hostile and, when Riga asks if she is related to the Beatrix Lander who was permanently injured trying to become a Junior World Ski Champion twelve years previously, Beatrix vigorously denies any connection. Yet on a visit to the Landers’ house, Riga sees a woman she knows to be the former champion!
Hockey has been re-discovered after nearly 600 years. Led by Rylla Blake, of Rosewood Centre of Education, the girls now have pitches, specially-adapted clothes, boots, sticks and, most important, a chief inspector on their side. He is trying to encourage hockey in all educational centres and has organised an instructors’ course, where Rylla ands her friends are demonstrating.
