The Champion from Nowhere

Plot

On returning home one evening, Helen and  Mike Kirby discovered a girl lying on their doorstep. The girl could remember nothing of her past, not even her own name, but she proved that she was a fine athlete. The Kirbys called the girl Anne, and promised to look after her until she was claimed.

“This is Your Home”

Plot

Fourteen year old, Magdalen Dennion was convinced that her father, who had  lost his memory, was the rightful heir to Sedley Hall, the big house where she worked as a housemaid. Once, when looking at a painting or Sedley Hall, Mr Dennion had said, “This is your home …”—and so started Magdalen on the search for her father’s family. However, a man claiming to be the missing heir, Sir Richard Sedley, had appeared and was instantly accepted as genuine by old Lady Sedley, whose sight was bad. Discovering that the man calling himself Sir Richard was an impostor, Magdalen realised that he would go to any lengths to keep the fortune that was within his grasp. Magdalen suspected that the butler, Soames, was also in the plot.

The Whispering Shadow

Plot

Sheila Hall was the first exciting prospect the Dolphin Swimming Club had produced since the days of Jean Holt, a former coach at the Dolphin. Jean had mysteriously vanished shortly after Sheila’s aunt, Anne Jordan, was attacked.  Anne Jordan, the Club’s secretary, was left paralysed and without any memory. Now the Club coach was Ethel Smythe, but then a mysterious woman known as the Whispering Shadow appeared at the Club. The Shadow, a superb swimmer, opposed Ethel Smythe’s training methods and began to take over Sheila’s coaching herself.

Prisoner of Zelda

Plot

Jeannie Blair had been chosen by Madame Zelda, for special ballet training at her castle school on Trevare, an island off the Cornish coast. After a series of tough tests, Jeannie was the only student left in school. Madame Zelda hoped to audition Jeannie for a place with the famous Romanski Ballet. Jeannie was determined to stay and solve the mystery of the castle tower, where Madame’s assistant, Mrs Vidler, had been seen carrying trays of food to the apparently empty room.

The Face that Haunted Hayley

Plot

After a bank robbery where explosives were used, a young girl lost her memory, and her speech. She ran away from hospital and met some fairground people, Pat and Jeff Alford. They discovered she was a talented artist, and decided to cash in by setting her up as an Instant portrait artist. They called her Hayley, and pretended to be her aunt and uncle. Hayley was haunted by the face of an unknown man —but could not resist a strange urge to keep drawing sketches of the mystery man’s face. Hayley’s only friend was Frank, a boy who worked at the fairground.

The Secret of the Smiling Doll

Plot

Fourteen year old Lynne Jones had lived in a Children’s Home since her parents were killed in a train crash. The only possession Lynne had from the past was a smiling handcarved wooden doll. On her way for a holiday Lynne discovered another doll almost identical to her own – the second doll wasn’t smiling. Lynne discovered that the man who made the doll was travelling along the coast. Convinced that he could tell her something about her past, Lynne set out to find the stranger.

Little Miss Mystery

Plot

A girl suffering from loss of memory is identified as Martha Landor,  the daughter of well-to-do parents. However, her parents, house and garden hold no memories for Martha. Only the grim housekeeper, Mrs Meeling, seems to stir the deeply-hidden past. As soon as the chance comes her way, Martha heads for the only place she can remember, the hospital she was brought to when she was first found.

Mystery at Music Manor

Plot

Peggy Rigby, a talented young musician, was tricked into leaving home and go to live with the mysterious Madame Vengali in Fleet Manor, high on the deserted cliffs on the Dorset coast. Also in the house were three other girls, all in the power of Madame Vengali.
