Publicity Penny

Plot

Penny Martin and her father are advance publicity agents for Pedroni’s Circus, in which Mrs Martin performs with a team of liberty horses.  An unknown man who has a hatred of circuses is making it difficult for them to advertise the show. The secret enemy bribes a man called Strake to set fire to the Martins’ van. Mr Martin is injured in the explosion that follows.

Mystery in the Mirror

Plot

When Elaine Dawson acquires an antique mirror, her personality changes for the worse whenever she looks into it. After consultation with Mrs Raynor, Elaine learns that she is becoming possessed by the spirit of an evil witch, Grizelda.

First-Aid Fay / Fay Farrell

Plot

Fay Farrell first appeared in the story First-Aid Fay;  Young Fay’s ambition is to be a nurse, but her wealthy parents won’t hear of it, so she leaves home and takes a job as First-Aid Assistant in Horton’s Biscuit Factory until she can save enough money to keep herself while she goes to Pre-Nursing Training School. Miss Carver, the strict Matron of the First-Aid Post, seems determined to make things difficult for Fay.  Another difficulty arises when Fay finds out that her father is on the factory’s Board of Directors.

Fay does get to continue her nursing ambition, returning in “Fay Farrell – Student Nurse”. When she becomes qualified she takes many different nursing jobs, including; an emergency nurse, fishermen’s nurse, jungle nurse and a school nurse.

Colleen and the Last Witch

Plot

Located next to  the town Ballyvale is the cave where Bumble the last witch of Ireland lives. She is upset by this new town disturbing her peace and regularly casts spells to try and drive the people away. She is always defeated by a young girl Colleen, who, as a 7th daughter of a 7th daughter, is immune to the witch’s spells.

Takeaway Terry

Plot

Life wasn’t easy for twelve year old Terry. Her Dad spent most of his time at the pub while her Mum was bingo mad, leaving Terry spending all her spare time doing housework and looking after her baby brother. Then her like of takeaway food brought a new complication – Mr Chung, the owner of the takeaway, discovered she had a talent for table tennis, and he wanted to train her to championship level.
