Plot:
Jenny Harbin lives with her Aunt Perry, whose job does not allow her much time for Jenny. Feeling lonely, Jenny allows some children to play in the garden, but she has to keep it secret from her aunt.
Betty Bruce, who is crazy about cars, is sent to Risedale Boarding School, where her sister, Brenda, is a prefect. Betty buys an old sports car called Jemima from a farmer and persuades Brenda to go with her to collect it. Betty is driving Jemima across a field when she sees Miss Donkin, the prim headmistress, who, has forbidden the girls of the school to have — anything to do with Mechanical contrivances.
Ruth Brown had saved the new scholarship girl at King Keep private school from bullying. Ruth knew she would have no influence over other girls if they knew her mother was only housekeeper at Cresthill Manor and didn’t own it.
In the village school of Rittley the students must work had for their exams in the hopes of getting into a nearby Grammer School. All games, music and other activities are banned making it quite a miserable place. This changes when Dora Fenton meets with the mysterious Miss Hilda Julian, who has recently moved to the village. Miss Julian sets up a choir in secret.
Cassandra Jones, known as Sandie, was going out with Michael Parker. Michael’s sister, Helen, was at the same school as Sandie, but the two girls hated each other, so Sandie did not want her to know the identity of her boyfriend.
Jane and Susie James were identical twins and had been brought up by their Great Aunt Katherine. When Aunt Katherine got into financial difficulties, they moved to a smaller house in a new town. The twins were eager to attend a private school near their new home, but Aunt Katherine could only afford for one of them to attend. The girls come up with the idea to secretly share their education, enrolling as Mary James – Jane did the classwork while Susie did the sports.
Nancy Dallas is forbidden to swim by her father so she enters competitions as Miss X. Though she is able to drop the name when her father becomes her best supporter.
Ann Baxter, a surgeon’s daughter, finds out that her classmate , Shirley Soames, the most unpopular girl in school, has a dangerous heart condition. She decides to befriend Shirley but she must keep her knowledge of her heart condition a secret no matter what.
Jane Drew’s ambition was to become a top model. But as her talented family thought of her as “Plain Jane”, she was keeping her ambition secret between her and Gran.
Young Sheena Clark had secretly agreed to ride in show-jumping competitions under the name Pam Jones. Sheena’s guardian disapproved of show-jumping and had sold her horse, Gaylad, to Pam Jones’ father. Pam, however, was unable to handle Gaylad and had persuaded Sheena to take her place in competitions.
