Twelve year old Susie Mather’s widowed mother ran a small dress – making shop in the town of Mardon. They had been in business for only a few months, but there were signs that the business was going to be a success. Then Mrs Mather breaks her hip and has to stay in hospital. Susie along with her mother’s assistant Mrs Coleman try to run the shop, but people don’t trust a schoolgirl to do the work. Susie comes up with the idea to encourage more business by offering a same-day service.
