Plot:
Michelle Taylor sets out to find the perfect girlfriend for her brother Gareth, and will settle for nothing less than the best.

In 1840, the Shaw children are orphaned and Rose, the eldest, is left in charge. They move into a cave in the roots of a tree they call the Guardian Tree because it seems to watch over them, protect them and give them advice and comfort in their fight for survival. They also have to keep their tree home secret from Matthew Crowe, the Parish beadle who means to put the younger children in the workhouse.

Gail Jenkins is unhappy when her parents move abroad and sends a letter begging them to return. Their plane crashes, leaving the father dead and the mother seriously injured. Gail’s sister Sue blames her because of the letter and their relationship becomes embittered.

Jenny Blake is a rebel and the terror of Heathfield Childrens’ Home. She wins a scholarship to Crane House, but hates it so much she tries to get herself expelled. Claire Dobson takes her in hand.
Victorian girl Dorothy Lambert has been taken in by her Uncle Ezra, who treats her like a poor relation. Now Dorothy is considered old enough to earn her own living, so Uncle Ezra packs her off to a boarding school where she is to earn her keep as a pupil-governess (earn her board and tuition by teaching and domestic duties, and get no wages). She is considered low by school staff and treated as such. But Uncle Ezra has told Dorothy that if she does not profit from her position, she will receive no more of his (cold) charity. On a stranger note, the school is said to be haunted by a ghost known as The Veiled Lady.
Plot:
Beth Maynard is fostered out to her Great Uncle Anthony. The grand-daughter Tara has died and Beth is given her bedroom. Then strange things start happening that suggest someone – or something – wants Beth out.
