Plot:
Cath Watson is allowed to rent Camilla Baxter-Smythe’s paddock for her horse Brantub because Camilla’s horse Desert Sands is lonely and needs company. Cath does not get on so well with Camilla because she is a snob, but things begin to change as the girls train for show-jumping.

In 1840, the Shaw children are orphaned and Rose, the eldest, is left in charge. They move into a cave in the roots of a tree they call the Guardian Tree because it seems to watch over them, protect them and give them advice and comfort in their fight for survival. They also have to keep their tree home secret from Matthew Crowe, the Parish beadle who means to put the younger children in the workhouse.

Gail Jenkins is unhappy when her parents move abroad and sends a letter begging them to return. Their plane crashes, leaving the father dead and the mother seriously injured. Gail’s sister Sue blames her because of the letter and their relationship becomes embittered.

Plot:
After their parents split up, Kelley King stays with her father while her sister Claire goes abroad with the mother. Then Claire comes back to live with Kelley, Dad and his new wife. But Claire has been nasty to Kelley ever since her return and is poisoning her friends against her.
