Jenny and the Robot Schoolgirl [1966]

Plot

Jenny Anderson is often very lonely because her scientist father is too busy and tends to neglect her. He also neglects the bills and keeping her private tutor paid. He invents a robot companion named Ruby for Jenny, which works out well. Ruby also serves as the housekeeper and Jenny’s tutor. When the bailiffs come collecting chattels to pay off Dad’s debts, Ruby gets rid of them, but Dad is worried they will come back for Ruby because they saw her components are valuable (gold, rubies and other precious stones). So he sends Ruby to a safe haven – school with Jenny!

Myrtle the Mermaid (1958)

Plot

Sylvia Johnson invents friends (princess, fairy etc) to play with because her parents’ cottage is so isolated in the school holidays and she has no friends to play with. So Mum and Dad are rather sceptical when Sylvia tells them she is bringing a mermaid called Myrtle to tea but decide to play along with it. But they don’t realise that this time, Sylvia is telling them the truth!

Sweet Sue [1973]

Plot

Sue Dawson goes into her Aunt Maud’s confectionery business, which really starts booming after Sue discovers Old Mother Mabel’s Sweetmeats recipe book. Their sweet shop starts undercutting the business of the unpleasant Mr Hale, so he tries to buy the recipes. When he gets a refusal he shows he is capable of getting them by underhand means. But he has reckoned without the ghost of Old Mother Mabel, who returns from beyond the grave to help Sue and her aunt.

Shivery Shirley

Plot:

When Kelly Bond’s mother opens a school at Charity Hall, Kelly discovers it is haunted by Shivery Shirley, a kitchen maid who died of the cold in prison after being wrongly accused of theft. Everywhere Shirley goes, cold and icy blasts follow her, hence her nickname.

Snow White and the Seventh Dwarf

Plot

Sara White is nicknamed Snow White by her father. She finds one of the garden gnomes is actually the youngest of the Seven Dwarfs. His name is Grem, and he has been disowned by the other dwarfs for running off with a gang of naughty elves and then turned into stone by a witch for playing tricks. The name of Snow White was needed to break the spell, and now that has happened, Sara is trying to help Grem reform so his brothers will forgive him. But Grem’s efforts don’t seem to go right.

Atlanta (1986); Atlanta’s Tale (1988)

Plot

Atlanta is a mermaid from the sea whose secret comes under threat from fortune hunters, and there are hijinks as she struggles with the ways of humans. In a sequel, Atlanta’s Tale, her secret is again under threat when photographers catch a glimpse of her tail in the water and become determined to capture a photograph of it and make themselves rich.

Plot

The Gregg children adopt a grandmother, Mrs Goodheart. They are in for a big surprise when they find Mrs Goodheart is a real fairy godmother.

Anna and the Piskies

Plot:

Anna Graeme goes to Cornwall, where her father leads a team of men prospecting for oil. But this threatens the home of the piskies, so they take Anna prisoner in a bid to stop the “Terror” as they call it. Anna also finds herself caught in a power conflict between Benito and Aggro. This culminates in Aggro ousting Benito and throwing him in the Blow Hole to drown. Benito’s followers help Anna to escape and they set out to rescue Benito.
