Plain Jane [1971]

Plot

Plain Jane Rose enters for a competition which has as its first prize; a holiday in Hawaii. That would be just right for Jane’s widowed mother who works very hard, pandering to the needs of her three other beautiful, but lazy, daughters.

The Pot Hunter

Plot:

Jean Greig a newcomer at Hartfield, Secondary Modern School, Mancaster, has helped the school to win a prized hockey trophy for the first time. It is games mistress Avis Hunter’s burning ambition to win more cups and trophies,and she makes the girls practise whenever possible. To get a break fromhockey, the girls also take up other activities.

The Quiz Kids

Plot

Doreen, Beryl and Grace, three pupils of Tinhorn Park School, have entered a knock-out quiz contest organised by a news-paper. The girls hope to win the first prize of £1000 to prevent their small, private school being closed. Secretly, the deputy headmistress’s brother, Geoffrey Pickard, is plotting to get the school’s land as a factory site. Miss Pickard, who has been promised a good job in the factory, is determined to prevent the Quiz Kids winning the money. Having won the final of the Wessex area contest, the girls relax before the first round of the inter-county section by practising hockey on the morning of Parents’ Day.

Cherry’s Challenge

Plot

Fourteen year old Cherry Smith helped her parents run their small farm. Her best chum was a colt named Fancy that she helped break in.  Cherry was trying to form a team to enter gymkhana events.

Scatty Matty the School’s Last Hope

Plot:

Matilda “Matty” Trott had been tricked by her schoolmates into entering a contest to find the Rippley Rosebud.  All entrants were to be given tests not just of beauty, but of initiative.  The winner would accompany the reigning beauty queen the Rose of Rippley during the forthcoming carnival.

My Team’s the Best!

Plot

Megan Davis and Tessa Giles had been friends for years and both kept their ponies at the same stables. Then both girls were picked for the pony club horse trials teams – but each for a different team. Only the best team would compete at the arena competition. The girls promised this wouldn’t affect their friendship but  it was proving hard not to get competitive.

The Reluctant Beauty

Plot

Sandra Peach was tricked by Kaye, her younger sister, into entering a beauty contest which, much to her surprise. she won! Sandra agreed somewhat reluctantly to enter more contests, but only on condition that her university studies didn’t suffer.

Hooray for the Holidays! [1969]

Plot

When the matron of Sunnydale Orphanage was injured in an accident if looked as if the girls’ holiday at Sandbay, would be cancelled. The girls, led by Jan Martin, were experts at winning trophies and prizes, and when Mrs Creech and her daughter, Lobelia, heard of this they offered to look after the girls, intending to keep the prizes for themselves.
