Hetty with the Healing Hand (1981)

Plot

Hetty Holt has a strange mark on her hand that gives her the power to heal. The Maggs take advantage of it and her, threatening to denounce her as a witch if she does not comply with their demands. (Hetty lives in an age that is past the witch hunting era, but the superstition is still strong among the lower classes.)

Botany Belle

Plot:

The scheming governess Miss Fallon switches Lady Merrilee Manners, the ward of Sir Anthony Manners and heiress to Roxham Hall, with Belle Thorn, a thief. As a result, Lady Merrilee gets five years in Botany Bay for theft while Miss Fallon passes off Belle as Merrilee.

Sadie’s Sewing Machine

Plot

In 1870s Colorado, Sadie Heritage, her father and her brother Rolf’s family arrive in the boom town of Kowawa Springs. The men of the family find it difficult to get work, but Sadie is making ends meet with her sewing machine. The men eventually find good jobs, but Rolf’s family are still hanging on and expect Sadie to slave for them all the time.

The Seeker

Plot

The famous music hall star Madame Nellie Selba seems to be a hard-hearted woman. But this is a front for her secret identity as The Seeker, a mysterious masked woman who helps runaway girls. Her goal is to find her own daughter, who was rendered homeless and turned out on the streets while Nellie was looking for work. When she finally traces her daughter, she discovers she has fallen foul of a racket that sells homeless children into slavery.

A New Life for Lily

Plot

In Victorian times, Polly Bond and her little sister Lily live in poverty. Polly sees a chance to improve her sister’s life by leaving her on the doorstep of the wealthy Delbert family so she will be adopted by them. After four years in a workhouse, Polly comes to the Delbert household as a scullery maid, telling nobody that she and Lily are sisters. But Polly is shocked to find her sweet little sister is now spoiled and selfish!

The Secret Servant

Plot

Sarah Armstrong’s cruel uncle took over her old home after her father died and his current will left everything to the uncle. There is a new will, which leaves everything to Sarah and her mother, but it is in the house somewhere and there are only three months to find it. Sarah disguises herself by dyeing her hair and takes a job as a servant in the house to find the will. In the meantime, Sarah is finding how hard the life of a servant is.

Children of the Night

Plot

The evil Aunt Mabel runs an orphanage for homeless children where she shuts out sunlight on them, making them blind by day but able to navigate in the dark. This is so she can send them out to steal at night. When justice catches up with Aunt Mabel, the children are taken in by the generous and wealthy Mrs Rigby, who is given one month to reform them.

The Westfield Wager

Plot

Rose Westfield’s Uncle Joshua has gambled away most of the family’s prized possessions. Then he makes a wager with Sir Ralph Granger, staking all the money Sir Ralph has won from him against Rose’s horse Midnight that she can ride from Land’s End to John O’Groats in ten days. If she fails, she loses Midnight, but agrees to the race on condition her Uncle Josh give up gambling. Rose is confident of winning, but is up against added difficulties of Sir Ralph’s groom Sykes out to stop her and then her eyesight beginning to fail after a blow to her head.

The Hooded Angel

Plot

In Victorian times, Henrietta Fairnsworth adopts the disguise of the Hooded Angel to secretly help the poor. She has to contend with the cruel Silas Baines, the pit manager who has been left in charge of the house while her father is away.
