Dark Days for Jo – but no one must know! / Jo’s Gym

Plot

Jo Torrance is a talented young gymnast when she begins to lose her sight  at times. She doesn’t want to tell anyone in case it ruins her gymnastics ambitions, and she get get help from her driven coach WIlson, who trains her to do her routines blindfolded.

Jo returned in a sequel Jo’s Gym where she tries to start a gym club, but has to do it in a disused warehouse in a poor area of town with makeshift equipment she has made herself.

The Sadness of Happy Jones

Plot

Life was hard for orphan Hazel Jones. Living with her Uncle Paul and Aunt Ena, Hazel was to do all the housework for her Aunt, who pretended to be an invalid. Hazel knew only one-way to keep her spirits up—by singing. Her greedy Uncle Paul realised there was money to be made from Hazel’s voice, and entered her for a television talent contest. Hazel quickly became a star, and was nicknamed ‘ Happy ‘, but the happiness was not real.

Hope’s End

Plot

Sandra Lambert was reading an old diary found in the cellar of  a crumbling building which in Victorian times had been Sir Joshua Hope’s Home for the Poor. Because all hope had gone for the orphans who lived there, the grim place had come to be known as Hope’s End. The diary is not written by one person, so Sarah learns a lot about the different people who lived there.

Best of Enemies [1983]

Plot

Jill Sands and Linda Kerr were both competing for the Soames Award at school. The prize included £1000 and both families needed the money. Jill and Linda had been best friends, but now they were both desperate to win the prize they no longer seemed to get on with each other.
