Plot

Jenny Carter strikes up a friendship with Pippa Parker who has moved into Harwood Hall with her guardian Mrs Gore. When Jenny meets Pippa at school later she seems to be a completely different girl, she has no interest in Jenny only in schoolwork and appears to incredibly smart and great at all things. By investigating Jenny finds out that Mrs Gore is running experiments on Pippa using a special computer every night. When the effect wear off later in the day Pippa is her normal self, Jenny agrees to try and help her.  Mrs Gore plans to replace teachers if her experiments are a success so Jenny tries to help Pippa fail. Such as when the computer teaches Pippa lines of play but she is only able to remember them if the cues are right, Jenny reading against her changes the words slightly to confuse her or during a cross-country trial she challenges her to run up extra hill to keep her going till the computer effects wear out.
