In the year 1880, the Honourable Hilary Lacey lost both her parents. Hilary decided to use her wealth by providing a home for waifs and strays from the workhouse. But the Beadle, Mr. Higgins was plotting against Hilary with a young accomplice a boy named Jack.
When a new charlady came to work at the home of Charlotte Colwell, the girl became strangely drawn to the woman. Charlotte’s wealthy parents had little time to spend with their daughter, but the charlady quickly saw how lonely the girl was. Unable to accept t he friendship between Charlotte and the servant, her parents sent her away to a strict school, feeling sure she would never see the charlady again. Charlotte hated the snobbish school but then charlady got a job at the school.

In Britain, in the year 1940, after her father was lost a sea Nancy Nelson, went to live at Morvel Mansion, along with several evacuees. The manor house was really an old people’s home and there was often trouble between the young and the old. Later Nancy becomes convinced her father is actually alive. She is proven right but it appears her father is working for the Germans. Despite the evidence Nancy refuses to believe her father is a traitor.
Mandy Rogers had won a place at the famous Lambert School of Ballet. But when she arrives at the school, she discovers that she is going deaf. She decides to keep this secret as she is afraid that she will have to leave to school if anyone found out.
