Make-and-Mend Molly

Plot

At the end of last century, in a northern mill town, young Molly Bolton was supporting her two sisters and herself with their old sewing machine. Molly vowed that they would never work at Arkell’s mill, where the had conditions had caused the deaths of both their parents. For helping the townspeople against him, mill-owner Joss Arkell turned Molly and her sisters out of their cottage. Rose, who had never been strong, collapsedand the local doctor made Joss Arkell give the girls an attic room in his house where Rose could be nursed back to health. Then a mob attacked the mill. Joss Arkell pleaded with Molly to try to calm the rioters and save his property.

Plot

The Eyes that Haunted Hannah / Sing a Song of Hate!

Plot

During 1886, fourteen year old Hannah Grey was a singer in the Victorian Music Hall. One night  she made an enemy of Mystro, the famous hypnotist, while she was singing ‘The Little Lost Dog.’ Soon afterwards, whenever she heard that song, Hannah began to have terrible fits of temper which she could never remember. She was without money or friends. Haunted by a vision of Mystro’s eyes, she knew that she must find him to regain her happiness.

Plot

Willa Shaw’s wish to be able to win  at something had been granted by a strange old woman whom Willa had helped. Unfortunately, winning all the time could bring trouble, as Willa soon discovered.

A New Life for Linda

Plot

All her life, Linda Drummond dreamed  of becoming a skating champion. At fifteen she left the orphanage where she had been brought up and began to work towards, her ambition. Hard work and dedication soon showed results, but one day she found she was losing her sight. She thinks it may be the end of her dream until a mysterious blind woman decides to train her.

Little Miss Moneybags [1970]

Plot

Tracey Betts was form captain of 4B at Barnsdale School for girls She also had another job at the school as trustee of the Wendell Trust fund, which passed to her after her mother’s death. While previously the fund had been small it seems this year there was a lot more money to come and Tracey was to have final say in everything, which didn’t please Miss Glebe, the headmistress. Tracey also had an ally in the mysterious cleaner, Mrs Tuffet.

Tomorrow’s Champion the story of a skater

Plot

When Susan Kemp, a sixteen-year-old orphan, went  to live with the unpleasant Fletcher family, all that kept her going was her love of skating and her dream of one day becoming British champion. The Fletchers daughter, Carol, also took part in the rink competitions and she was jealous of Susan. The only friend Susan had was a mysterious woman, who helped her when the was in trouble. Susan’s happiness at achieving Bronze Medal standard was clouded by the fact that she had strained her back in helping Carol when they were in a train crash.

Brenda’s Book of Knowledge

Plot

Brenda Crane was a boarder at Hollyford House School. Her grandfather had sent her an ancient encyclopedia, which covered every subject under the sun and Brenda was always consulting it, often with comical results.

The Alice Band / Brampton’s Big Noise

Plot

When Alice Allen started teaching at Grimshaw Girls’ School, she started a band with her students. The girls had named the band after their new teacher and entered a Brass Band Contest. One of the girls, Chris Wilson, showed particular talent and Alice encouraged her to apply for a music scholarship.

In the sequel, Brampton’s Big Noise, the story follows Chris Wilson who had won the scholarship to Brampton College of Music. She had come up the hard way, and had made two enemies at college – a couple of snobs Prue Fletcher and Gwen Terry.
