Bad Penny (1987)

Plot

Boastful and selfish Penny Thorpe had stolen  an old coin from a blind man. It was having a bad influence over her life, spoiling her chance to join school swimming team. She made sure the old penny was well and truly buried when a road outside he school was relaid — but, soon afterwards, Miss Melbury,the swimming teacher, had a road accident and Penny got the coin back.

Dana from the Deep

Plot

Eleven-year-old Dana West had been adopted after she was discovered as a tiny baby abandoned on the seashore. One day, while at the beach, a voice from a sea shell told Dana that she was really one of the Sea-people and must return to the sea before her twelfth birthday. If she disobeyed the summons, she would have to pay a terrible penalty.

Gift of the Gods

Plot

Delphi Lucas was unhappy when her dad sent her to Olympia College, where everything studied, recreations,and even the food was Greek. Hurting her foot on a cross-country run during a strange electrical storm, she found herself among girls dressed like ancient Greeks. She met a man who claimed to be Hermes, ancient messenger of the gods.

Lost on the Planet of Fear

Plot:

The Wells family was part of the first group of settlers to land on the planet Guddup, re-named Good Hope by the people back on Earth. Within hours of landing, Pauline and David’s parents, along with the rest of the party, had disappeared. Pauline and David discovered they had been taken to The City of Shining Blue and now they were trying to follow them. In the desert, they came across a ghost-town, where flags from Earth were displayed.

I’m No Chicken

Plot:

Talented swimmer Cherry Chivers, was mistakenly branded a coward at Clifftops Boarding School, by five members of  D-Dorm and presented with five toy chickens. She was determined to prove five times that she was no chicken. One afternoon she was desperately trying to assist Tina, who had fallen while retrieving matron’s kitten from a tree.

Green for Danger

Plot:

After an explosion at the Amberwell Research Station, Gilda Holmes, daughter of  one of the scientists, had acquired super-human powers at times, though afterwards she remembered nothing. Dr Sable, who was responsible for the explosion, used Gilda to obtain money for some secret experiments. Gilda’s powers suddenly deserted her as she was stealing a famous art-treasure and Sable, in telepathic contact, urged her furiously to fight to regain them.

Too Clever for School

Plot:

Kim Harding lived with her grandfather, Dr  John Hording, in a cave above the town of Radford. Dr Harding, a brilliant scholar, had educated Kim in his own way, but the authorities insisted that Kim must go to school. Miss Snope, Kim’s teacher, did not approve of such an unusual pupil.

A Secret Place

Plot:

When Molly Manders’ parents drowned, shock made her young sister, Katie, lose all memory of the accident. A couple named Hobson wanted to adopt Katie only, but the sisters ran away to a secret cave behind a waterfall. They were befriended by a wild boy, Colin, and later by a reporter, Bill Owen, who went to London to enquire about a locket Katie wore, which the Hobsons wanted. When Katie fell into the river, her memory began to return.

I Want to be a Swot!

Plot

Development for a new motorway threatens the home of Jenny Coney and her grandfather, along with others. Their only hope of saving their home is a book that has been in the family for generations. But the book is in Latin, so Jenny is compelled to go to the local school to learn Latin as quickly as possible so as to translate the book. Meanwhile, the PE teacher Miss Callister realises Jenny has a natural talent for hurdling and begins training her up for events.
