The Unwilling Thieves

Plot

In 1942, a bomb fell, making orphans of Jenny Owen, her young  brother Bobby and five other girls. Mrs Briggs took the children in, gave them every comfort and taught them party games. But Jenny knew that this was just a cunning way to make the girls skilful at stealing. Later, however, Jenny made a more startling discovery, about the Briggs household!

A Secret Place

Plot:

When Molly Manders’ parents drowned, shock made her young sister, Katie, lose all memory of the accident. A couple named Hobson wanted to adopt Katie only, but the sisters ran away to a secret cave behind a waterfall. They were befriended by a wild boy, Colin, and later by a reporter, Bill Owen, who went to London to enquire about a locket Katie wore, which the Hobsons wanted. When Katie fell into the river, her memory began to return.

Ellie Mae

Plot:

Ellie Mae and her sister Sally Jane are bringing two buckets of Yellermelon spring water to their Granny Tickle, who is dying to drink it. But Ellie’s cousins, the McNaughtys, are trying to stop them because they want Granny to leave her fortune to them.

Ruthless Ruth

Plot:

Show-jumper Ruth Collins is nicknamed “Ruthless Ruth” because she goes out to wins as much as possible. But the money is meant to pay off her father’s debts to Jardine Holdings. She does not realise that Holdings deliberately set the interest rates too high so he could buy out her father.  Things get worse when Ruth takes a job with the unscrupulous Vallones, and there are soon very nasty plots against Ruth once Holdings realises she is paying off the debts better than he expected.

Patsy Pincher

Plot

Orphan Patsy Pincher, adopted by Colonel Travers,  had been treated like a skivvy after the colonel was killed. The colonel’s will left everything to Patsy, provided that she stayed at the Manor. Mrs Bartlett, the colonel’s niece, together with her daughter, Lila, and the sinister butler, Sleeg, wanted to make Patsy run away. Patsy found out that a medallion she owned had once been in the colonel’s family, and had been given to a mysterious Jessica. Then she was told by a stranger that Jessica’s daughter was drowned as a baby.

Linda of Silver Lake

Plot

Silver Lake wildlife sanctuary is threatened by a wealthy businessman called Hinkson, who wants to convert the sanctuary into a water-skiing playground for his daughter Bonnie.

Karin for Queen

Plot

Queen Helena of Ravia rarely appears in public because of her shyness. So the nobles, led by Baron de Guise, want to put Helena’s cousin Prince Hugo on the throne, deeming him a better ruler.  Bess, the Queen’s old nurse, tries to outwit the Baron by training a wandering player, Karin, to take the Queen’s place. Prince Hugo agrees to this, but the Baron  is determined to stop the Queen from being crowned, and it may only be a matter of time before he discovers Karin.

The Unwanted One

Plot

Molly Harkiss, a village girl, has claimed the right to free education at exclusive Didbourne Manor School, a right that is one of the conditions of the grant of land to the school. But the snobby girls at Didbourne do not make Molly welcome and plot to get her expelled.
