Boundary Babs

Plot:

Under the terms of an ancient charter granting land to her ancestors, Babs Dixon has to run the boundaries of her father’s farm. Otherwise it falls into the hands of Sir Jeffrey Scrimley, who has already arranged an “accident” for her father and is now scheming against her.

Rose Budd

Plot:

When fourteen-year-old Rose Budd came from Canada to visit her sick grandfather in England, in 1857, she found he had died, leaving everything to his servants, Mr and Mrs Jay, who believed there was gold hidden in the house. Rose also learned that Mr Reed, a neighbouring rose grower, wanted to buy Elm Lodge, as he believed her grandfather had been raising a new species of rose. Finding Rose in her grandfather’s study, Mrs Jay ordered her out of the house.

Paula and the House of Secrets

Plot:

When  Paula Barry’s soldier brother won  her a brooch at a fair, she treasured it thinking it worth only pence. The brooch was a valuable heirloom stolen from elderly Lady Digley by her niece and nephew, Edith and Edward, who befriended Paula in an effort to regain the brooch. Paula’s brother was killed and she put the brooch away with his belongings. Then Paula’s foster-mother, Mrs Forest, was rushed to hospital.

Diamonds for Danger

Plot

Unknown to gipsy sisters Bettina and Nina Kayak, an agent of the young Helena of Moritania had sewn the diamonds of the Coronation necklace on the girls’ dancing dresses in their caravan. It was a law of the country that the Coronation could not take place if the queen were not wearing the necklace; and the queen’s enemies, led-by William, the Prince Regent, were determined to find it.

The Courage of Kim

Plot:

Kim Dale has the task of retaining Yeoman’s Isle, her family’s home, by swimming round it in accordance with the conditions of a 12th-century charter, although she is suffering from an ever-increasing paralysis which she fears will immobilise her. Kim has discovered that the present landlord, the Mayor, knows of treasure on the island and is trying to force the Dales to leave. She, her brother, Dick, and her friend, Sally, try to find the treasure in a secret cave, but lose their boat in an avalanche. When two of the Mayor’s men come to the cave, Kim, Dick and Sally try to escape in their boat

Heartbreak Hotel

Plot

Young Helen and Frankie Whitley are running Hollybank, a small country hotel in the village of Clerewell, while their parents are in hospital. Hollybank has already earned the name of ”Heartbreak Hotel”, because of the bad luck that has apparently dogged it—secretly due to underhand work by Mr Judd, owner of the rival Stirrup Cup Inn. Financial difficulties force Helen to sell some of the furniture and she is left without enough chairs for her guests, the unpleasant Wimpson family. Helen gives up her own chairs and she and Frankie have to make do with old ones given to them by the mother of Daisy, their scatterbrained cook-general. However, when Frankie decides to fix the springs of one of the choirs, she finds it is padded with money!

Plot

After the death of her parents, Tessa Saunders was cared for by her Aunt Abigail and Uncle George, a scheming greedy couple who wanted Tessa’s inheritance for themselves. To this end, they adopted Una, a girl from a local orphanage. Their plan was to return Tessa to the orphanage as unsuitable in the place of Una, as the two girls looked remarkably alike.

Carla the King’s Protector

Plot:

Carla Gale, a young chimney sweep, lived in Loravia. She overheard General Krill plotting to kill the young King, Simon the sixth, so she hid the boy in her cottage.  Then Carla discovered that General Krill had employed a boy to take the King’s place – and he was an  exact double of King Simon.
