Shirley the Shadow

Plot

Thirteen year old  Shirley Lawson had the same rare blood type as Julia Milson Smith, the spoiled daughter of millionnaire industrialist, Gilbert Milson Smith. Shirley was forced to stay close to Julia  as a shadow in case she ever needed a blood transfusion. Mr Milson Smith had given Julia’s widowed mother a job and her family a home, so Shirley knew that if she tried to leave her family would be turned out.

The Many Faces of Morna

Plot

Under the stage name of Aurora Daye, Morna Reynolds entered the ” Search for a Superstar” Contest—unknown to her nasty guardians, her Uncle Gerald and Aunt Sybil. Performing in disguise, Morna had reached the semi-finals, beating her unpleasant cousin, Pat, on the way. When Morna accidentally added salt instead of sugar to the ingredients she packed for Pat’s school cookery lesson, the spiteful Pat became determined to cause trouble for Morna—in any way she could!

The Secret of the Smiling Doll

Plot

Fourteen year old Lynne Jones had lived in a Children’s Home since her parents were killed in a train crash. The only possession Lynne had from the past was a smiling handcarved wooden doll. On her way for a holiday Lynne discovered another doll almost identical to her own – the second doll wasn’t smiling. Lynne discovered that the man who made the doll was travelling along the coast. Convinced that he could tell her something about her past, Lynne set out to find the stranger.

The Secret of the Crystal Ball

Plot

Lisa Roberts had been brought up in an orphanage and knew nothing of her early childhood but, with the help of a gipsy crystal ball, she hoped to find out about her parents. Lisa joined a group of gipsies. two of them—Benito and Carla—had promised to help Lisa to find Old Bella, a gipsy woman who often appeared in the crystal’s strange pictures. Lisa was grateful for their help, and was completely unaware that they were tricking her—for they knew very well that Old Bella was dead!

A Riddle for Rona

Plot

Heiress, Rona Farrell who was an orphan, was always willing to help a good cause. But she usually lost interest in the scheme before long and got distracted by something new. When Rona asked her guardian, Sir William Farrell, for money to help a riding school for disabled children, he agreed on the condition she carry out certain tasks which were set out in the form of rhyming riddles.

A Piano for Prudence

Plot

In the year 1880, Prudence Proctor and her brother Philip, who were orphans, became homeless after the death of their guardian. An uncle and his wife, Sir Bertram and Lady Sylvia Thornber, offered them a home. Prudence hoped for a musical career, but at Thornber Hall, they were forced to work as servants. Prudence was ordered to travel to London with a violinist, Professor Florenzo. as his accompanist on a tour of the Music Halls. Prudence was very worried about Philip, who had been sent to work with a bullying shepherd.
