Little Miss Busyfingers

Plot

It is the end of World War II. All the other evacuees have left the Larches, home to Misses Daphne and Edith Burntree. Vi (Violet) Lambeth has stayed on because the housekeeper, Mrs Porter, is kind to her. But then the Misses Burntree sack Mrs Porter and start using Vi as an unpaid servant. They also get rid of the piano Mrs Porter left Vi as a gift, so Vi has to find other ways of playing the piano. And Vi has to contend with bullies at school as well.

The Despised Ones

Plot

Text story. Callie Conway is bullied at school because she is plain, awkward and has no friends. Her Aunt Susan is no help because she is not really interested in Callie. Then Callie meets a kindred spirit in Clop, a pony who is being bullied by the other ponies because he is plain and awkward too. Callie gets a job at the stables so she can get close to Clop, but most of the things she does go wrong – as usual.

April Fool

Plot:

April Matthews is being blackmailed into taking second fiddle to Shirley Kingsley and being her slave so Shirley can be the star of the school. The blackmail is that Shirley’s father is threatening to withdraw his loan that the Matthews family need for the treatment to save the sight of April’s sister Tina. The blackmail has April being labelled “April Fool”.

In the end April discovers Shirley tricked her into it all and Tina got her sight cured elsewhere. Shirley gets caught out and has no choice but to confess to the headmistress.

Plot

Patti Charlton is a talented artist and wants to go to art school. But when her unscrupulous Uncle Sid adopts her to look after his motherless twins, he forbids her to paint, so she has to find ways of getting to art school in secret. She also has to contend with bullying at school, especially with spiteful Alice.

The Cat with 7 Toes

Plot

Orphan Jenny Potter takes Twinkle, a stray kitten, into her uncle’s home at Lynhoe. Unfortunately Twinkle has seven toes on each paw (a polydactyl cat), so the superstitious villagers think he is descended from the legendary seven-toed cats of the witches of Lynhoe. They start persecuting Twinkle and blame any bad luck on him. Their hostility drives  Jenny to run away with Twinkle.

The Outcasts of Underwood School

Plot

Twins Debbie and Carol Lowe sit a scholarship exam to Underwood Boarding School, but then they wish they hadn’t once they find out how snobby the Underwood girls are. However, they do pass the scholarship exam and have to attend Underwood, as its first day pupils. But the snobby pupils do not make them welcome, and Virginia Fishenden is their worst enemy.

Eventually Virginia pulls a trick on the twins that backfires and she nearly burns the school down. Virginia is shocked into confessing and her ashamed mother withdraws her from the school. The twins are then accepted by the other girls.

Top of the Class

Plot:

A couple of girls pick on Joanne for being brilliant at schoolwork and call her “swot rag”. To stop the bullying, Joanne starts deliberately underachieving. Once she starts doing this the bullying does ease up – but then Joanne’s mother gets the inevitable letter from school about her deteriorating school work. Joanne has to admit what is going on, and her mother says to get some backbone and get back in there with her schoolwork. Joanne is afraid to do so because of what the bullies might do – until she finds out the real reason why the bullying started in the first place.

Callous Cassie

Plot:

Cassie Brown is a teacher at Morley Grange School, which is run by the cruel and hated Miss Pike. Cassie is just as much hated by the pupils and nicknamed “Callous Cassie”. They do not know Cassie is only pretending to be cruel in order to secretly help them against Miss Pike.
