Plot

In 1942, a bomb fell, making orphans of Jenny Owen, her young  brother Bobby and five other girls. Mrs Briggs took the children in, gave them every comfort and taught them party games. But Jenny knew that this was just a cunning way to make the girls skilful at stealing. Later, however, Jenny made a more startling discovery, about the Briggs household!

Plot:

In the 1880’s, half-Indian orphan Nan Scott had embarked on a long, dangerous journey to the Canadian border in search of a place where she and her animal friends would really belong. When Nan reached the town of Morton’s Creek, she found it had a problem—no creek.

The Power of Petra

Plot:

Shirley Smith, a new pupil at Redcliffe Towers Boarding School, discovers that Petra Barnes has a hold over everyone to get her own way at everything. Even the headmistress is in Petra’s grip, so Petra can arrange to have girls expelled for crossing her, and several pupils go this way. Shirley is determined to find out what gives Petra her power over Redcliffe Towers.

Tanya [1976]

Plot:

Tanya Kovak and her parents were in a  refugee camp somewhere in Europe. Tanya had always loved dancing and Pavel Vronski, a famous ballet master, offered Tanya lessons at his school. But, when the winter came, the journey to and from the local town proved too much for Tanya.

Plot:

Moira Davies was the owner of a magic mirror, which came to her in mysterious circumstances on her fourteenth birthday. When it was taken out of its special bag, anything it was turned upon immediately became invisible for a time.

The Sound of Fear [1967]

Plot

Government experts are investigating a fantastic noise which, from time to time, strikes Tatany Heights School. One of the experts, Mr Tenby, claims that the noise is caused by low-flying jet planes, but his companion, Mr Mountjoy, goes to investigate the downs near the school, where Pat Sims and Anne Dennis have seen weirdly-dressed figures. When Pat and Anne go to warn Mr Mountjoy that Mr Tenby is impatient to leave, he vanishes before their eyes. sound of fear

Plot:

Janie Clarke is now ashamed of how her jealousy made foster-girl Sue Grant so miserable that she went back to the children’s home. A year later they meet up again in a new locality and school. Janie is trying to find a way to convince Sue of her contrition. But her attempts always go wrong and give the impression she is still persecuting Sue.

The Girl Who Hated Ballet

Plot:

Judy Joliffe is working in the Mallory Hotel, Seabourne, to earn enough money to pay lessons at Madame Belona’s Ballet School. Judy discovers that Lorna Mallory, the daughter of her employer, was once a pupil at the school, but left suddenly and now hates ballet. Barbara Baynard, a girl who is jealous of Judy, persuades her to come out to Shell Island to collect shells for the scenery of “The Holidaymakers” ballet, which the school is presenting that night as part of Seabourne’s Festival Week. Barbara is determined to get Judy’s part, the leading role of Poppy Pierrette.
