The Long Trek

Plot:

On their way to Santa Fe, to join their parents,in 1840, Becky Jennings and her brother, Robin, were alone in Comanche territory—until the arrival of a helpful young redskin, Red Hawk, who had lost the power of speech. But Red Hawk was wounded by the renegade Comanche, Wild Bull, and his men, and left for dead. Becky and Robin moved on, unaware that he was still alive.

Dorrie Down Under

Plot:

Things had been going well for the Myott family at John Bilcombe’s sheep station in Australia until Mr Bilcombe married. Although she acted kind when her husband was around, Mrs Bilcombe showed her real self as a hard slave driver to the Myotts. .

The Tree Sprite

Vicky Gibbs has a miserable job in service because the other servants bully her, but says nothing to her family because they depend on her job. She confides in an oak tree, which turns out to be inhabited by a tree sprite. The bullying gets worse when another servant Millie, starts blackmailing Vicky into doing all her chores, leaving Vicky with no time for her own. The tree sprite wreaks revenge on Millie, but the servants deem the tree dangerous. They are out to cut it down when Master Richard returns from his art studies. He stops them and gives Vicky a new job – the model for his new painting “Nymph in a Tree”. Master Richard makes his fortune with the painting and Vicky and her family never want again.

Rachel Riche and Penny Poore

Plot:

In the 1740s, Penny Poore lives with her Uncle Barnaby, warder of Marshalsea Prison. He is a cruel man and Penny feels just as much a prisoner as the inmates, whom she tries to help in any way she can. Simeon Riche is brought to the prison for debt and asks to keep his daughter Rachel with him. This request is granted, but they need money to pay for the father to be put in more comfortable conditions than the common cells. As Rachel is not technically a prisoner, she is allowed to go out to raise the money, and she strikes a friendship with Penny.

Remember the Blood Red Rose

Plot:

Complete story. In 1815 Brussels, the Duke of Wellington’s officers are entertaining the ladies. Serena Malvern is not allowed to dance because she is considered too young, so she is merely watching and notices her sister Sybilla is taking a fancy to one of the officers, Lieutenant Pelham.

Red roses are tossed at the Highlander fighters’ dance. Serena objects because the scarlet petals look like blood to her. Her misgivings are dismissed as the soldiers think Napoleon is finished. Serena is not so sure about this. And her premonition proves right when news arrives that Napoleon has returned. Pelham is killed in action at the Battle of Waterloo the next day. Serena keeps a  scarlet petal that fell from Pelham’s uniform to remember him by.

The Evil of Emily

Plot

Kate Williams is about to be adopted by Lord and Lady Lester when she is badly burned in fire caused by nasty Emily West. When she recovers, she discovers that Emily is posing as her to be adopted in her place. Kate goes into the household as a scullery maid to expose Emily, but is impeded by the loss of her voice from the fire and being illiterate. She is overcoming the latter by learning to write, but Emily keeps sabotaging her efforts to prove her identity, and eventually gets her thrown into prison.

Kitty’s Kitchen

Plot:

In 1808  Kitty Kelly was a cook with part of the British army fighting the French in Spain. She had the company of Jane, an officer’s wife, on the long, wintry march towards Corunna. On the march, too, were soldiers’ wives and children.

Trader Tess

Plot:

To save her Uncle Barney’s Brine shipping company from ruin in 1890, Tess Taylor had taken the ship, Seabird, on a trading cruise in the South Pacific.

The Impostor!

Plot

Scheming maidservant Hetty Brown tricks the Honourable Harriet Mannering into trading places with her. Harriet strives to prove her identity agains the increasingly nasty tricks from Hetty to stop her, and and in the meantime Harriet is discovering how hard the life of a servant can be.
