Slave of the Top Twenty

Plot

Andrina Faye is Britain’s top girl pop star and her records all hit the Top Twenty. But this is because Mr Faye is blackmailing Jill Summers into using her voice for the recordings by threatening to get Mr Summers sent to prison for embezzling. Then Jill discovers that Mr Faye framed her father.

Trouble on Wheels

Plot

On the day Jan Patterson’s little brother, Neil,  was to have the plaster removed from his injured leg, the doctor discovered a complication and ordered the plaster to be retained. Jan felt responsible, as Neil had fallen from his chair while in her charge. Realising that Jan felt guilty, Neil rook advantage of his position and blackmailed her.

Cat Conway

Plot

Acting under the instructions of the sinister  Burglar, and in order to save her captive twin sister, orphan Cat Conway used her skill as a gymnast to steal the Crown of Carranowa. The police questioned the gymnastics team who had stayed the night at Linklight Hall, opposite the art gallery from which the crown was stolen.

The Tree Sprite

Vicky Gibbs has a miserable job in service because the other servants bully her, but says nothing to her family because they depend on her job. She confides in an oak tree, which turns out to be inhabited by a tree sprite. The bullying gets worse when another servant Millie, starts blackmailing Vicky into doing all her chores, leaving Vicky with no time for her own. The tree sprite wreaks revenge on Millie, but the servants deem the tree dangerous. They are out to cut it down when Master Richard returns from his art studies. He stops them and gives Vicky a new job – the model for his new painting “Nymph in a Tree”. Master Richard makes his fortune with the painting and Vicky and her family never want again.

The Power of Petra

Plot:

Sheila the Sham

Plot

Sheila Ward and her younger brother and sister have lived in a children’s home since they were orphaned. When Sheila becomes deaf after an accident, their hitherto disinterested aunt and uncle suddenly take an interest in them. This is because they are after Sheila’s compensation money. So when Sheila’s hearing returns, her guardians blackmail her into pretending to still be deaf.

Meg and the Magic Robot

Plot

In 1925, Syd and Maud Weston force their niece Meg to fake being a Magic Robot. Meg goes along with the fraud because she thinks her uncle is sending money to pay for her brother Tommy’s treatment at a clinic in Switzerland. But the truth is that Uncle Syd is pocketing the money and Tommy is in the care of an old woman in the vicinity.

It’s a Dog’s Life

Plot:

When Lisa Thornley’s family are forced to move into a flat, she cannot take her dog Sandy because of the rules. Lisa cannot find a home for Sandy except with Vera Gibson, a nasty unpopular girl at school. Vera then starts using Sandy to blackmail Lisa by threatening to put him in the dogs’ home.
