The Revenge of Verna

Plot:

Verna Villiers bore a secret grudge  against her relatives, the Hayden family and vowed revenge on them for refusing to help her father who had died in poverty. After Verna set up a jewel robbery at Hayden House, the family faced financial ruin. But the woman crook who had been tipped off by Verna was found and brought to the house, in an effort to identify the informer.

Callous Cassie

Plot:

Cassie Brown is a teacher at Morley Grange School, which is run by the cruel and hated Miss Pike. Cassie is just as much hated by the pupils and nicknamed “Callous Cassie”. They do not know Cassie is only pretending to be cruel in order to secretly help them against Miss Pike.

A Place for Homing

Plot:

In the 1880’s, half-Indian orphan Nan Scott had embarked on a long, dangerous journey to the Canadian border in search of a place where she and her animal friends would really belong. When Nan reached the town of Morton’s Creek, she found it had a problem—no creek.

Fleetfoot – Girl of the Wilds

Plot:

Fleetfoot lives with the Indians but is not an Indian. She has a golden locket, which is her most prized possession, but she does not realise it holds the key to her true identity. When it opens, she cannot understand it because she cannot read. But Mr Hollins, whom she has befriended, can read it and they go in search of the ranch mentioned in the locket.

The Loneliest Girl in the School

Plot

In Victorian times, Isabel Long is sent to school by her guardians, as it was her father’s dying wish that she receive a good education. The school is a harsh one, run by the cruel Miss Dawkins. Isabel’s attempts to make friends always seem to end in doom, making her the loneliest and most miserable girl in the school. Then, when Isabel begins to make friends when some pupils take pity on her,  Miss Dawkins suddenly goes all out to make her  life extra miserable.

The Little Songbird

Plot

In 1880, the Forsyth family are left penniless after the death of the father. One daughter, Amy, is sent to a London school to study music while the younger daughter, Sally, goes to Paris with her mother, who had never shown her much affection. Mrs Forsyth wants to pursue art, and pursues it with single-mindedness that comes at the cost of the household’s welfare. But her paintings are not good enough to sell, so Sally secretly turns to singing to make ends meet.

Plot

Flight to Fame

Plot:

Orphan Ellie Masters was determined to reach New York, where she hoped to join a training academy for young singers, to be opened by the world-famous Madame Lucia Condello. In Kansas City, Ellie sang to earn money for food, but got into trouble with the law. She hid in a theatre, but was soon discovered.

Misery Mill

Plot

It is the year 1833 and Amy Barton a young orphan, is trying to make a living with her hand loom, in her cottage near Henry Crail’s mill. A new law is passed saying that factory children must have two hours schooling a day, and Amy becomes a teacher at Crail’s mill. She is worried when she discovers some of the men plan violence to force Crail to give them better working conditions.
