To See the Queen

Plot

In the year 1837, Nancy Marlow and her young  brother, Tom, set out from Dorset to see the Queen. Their father has been wrongfully sentenced to transportation and their mother arrested. Nancy is determined to ask the young Queen Victoria for justice. Reaching London at last, the children discover that the Queen is riding in procession that day to open Parliament, but are unable to get her attention.

No Pity for Paula

Plot

Paula Travis is a cripple whose disability is exploited by her Aunt Mildred and Uncle Herbert. They force Paula to work as a beggar and profit from her earnings. The exploitation depends on Paula staying crippled – so things begin to change when Paula starts taking secret ballet lessons from Miss Freeman and her legs improve.

The Red House

Plot

In the 19th Century, Alice Evans is personal maid to Dorothea Maris, wealthy young owner of the sombre Red House. Alice discovers that Dorothea’s relatives, Henry and Selina Scotter, are trying to keep Dorothea a helpless invalid for some secret purpose of their own, but Alice encourages Dorothea to walk. Knowing this, the Scotters stage an incident in which she girls are almost drowned, but luckily a passing boat rescues them. The Scatters convince Dorothea that Alice is to blame for the accident and she is dismissed. While Alice is packing her belongings, she sees a man prowling about in the grounds. To her amazement, it is the stranger who rescued Dorothea and herself when they had been left to drown by the Scotters.

Stocktons Stick Together

Plot:

The Stockton children, orphaned during a 19th Century trek across Canada, are split up to be looked after by various families. Joan, the eldest, finds gold and hires a guide, Bob Bowen, to help track down her three brothers and her sister. In Hudson’s Bay she finds baby John with Mr and Mrs Barton.

The Defiant Drummonds

Plot:

The Drummonds, Scottish immigrants living  in Canada towards the end of the 19th century, are hit by tragedy when both their parents die within a week of one another. Arrangements are made for the children- Jeannie, Robbie, Jenny and baby Ian to be looked after by neighbours, which means the family being split up. Jeannie, the eldest, makes up her mind to try to take  the others to uncle Jack, their only relative. The last they heard from their uncle he was working at a lumber camp some hundred miles away. There is not enough money to pay their fares there by railroad,  so they set off in a blizzard, through the forest.

Joan All-Alone

Plot

Joan Dixon, a young orphan girl, is a member of a wagon-train heading west across America in the 1860s. Joan joins the train as servant to a cruel couple called slade, but on the death of the Slades, she becomes the owner of their waggon and horses. As the wagon-train plods slowly west, Al Grice, one of the party, is impatient at the rate of progress.

The Story of Flora Fenton

Plot

It is 1747 and Flora Fenton, a talented Scots girl, has the chance of becoming an actress at Drury Lane if she can get to London. Her father, Neil, is a drover, and when he is asked to take a herd of cattle to Doncaster, Flora persuades him to employ her as a drover along with her brother, Ian. Morag Fenton, Flora’s mother, and small brother, Jamie,go, too. On the second day of the drove, two dishonest brothers—Davie and Enoch Breck—fall in with them and, by causing a series of accidents involving Flora, persuade Neil to send her home with Morag and Jamie while they take her place. However, the little party haven’t gone for on the homeward journey when they are overtaken by one of the cattle dogs bearing bloodstains. The Golden Shoes

Plot

It is the year 1189 and King Henry II has just died. Young Lady Maud of Norton has been entrusted by a wounded messenger with the task of taking the Royal Crown to London and Prince Richard. Prince John is trying to capture the crown for, without it, Richard cannot be King. For safety, Maud has the crown, of distinctive reddish gold, melted down and made into shoes for Starlight, her horse.

“Lead on Lucky”

Plot

In the year 1839, 12 year old Cathy Cartwright was sent to live with aunt, after her father’s associate betrayed him and left him penniless. After an accident while traveling to her aunt’s home, she was left blind with no memory and only her cat Lucky to guide her

Gwen Save the King

Plot

Gwen Forrest and her brother, Rob, live in England at the time of the Crusades. One night, Rob overhears four men plotting to kill the King of  England when he returns from the battles in the Holy Land. Rob is discovered, and a blow from a sword blinds the boy as he makes his escape. The children set out to warn the King on his arrival at Dover, pursued by one of the assassins, Gorot, a hunchback, who rides off on a pony he finds in the forest. He does not know that the children hove been ti using the pony on their journey.
