Chained to her Racket!

Plot

Jane Taggart  had been coached by her guardian, Rachel Strong, known as “the Coach”, who had filled the girl’s life with tennis even to the extent of chaining her to her racket. When Jane joined a professional tennis “circus” run by Jack Miller, he and his wife decided to arrange a party for Jane, but a jealous rival player, Pauline Fox, told Jane that if she went to the party there would be more to follow, eating into the time she would have for practising and playing tennis.

Joanne and the Challenge

Plot

Joanne French is the new games mistress at the Harold  Plackett School. The Headmistress, Miss Crossley, is against games and has challenged Joanne to get the hockey team into the finals of a local tournament or have games cut from the syllabus. But the team does well, and the Head arranges an accident—to keep Joanne off the sports field.

The Lady is a Champ

Plot

Lady Elizabeth Ellsworth, a fifteen-year-old girl, is being trained by her Aunt Ellen to win an Olympic Gold Medal. Lady Elizabeth wins a place in the Olympic team, and three girls, Spike, Butch and Fiona, arrive at Marestone to train in Lady Elizabeth’s private swimming pool. Aunt Ellen has just announced that, at the Games, Lady Elizabeth will not be allowed to stay in the Olympic Village, but will stay privately with her.

Cannonball Kate

Plot

Helped by Janet Lee, a visiting games teacher, the girls of Gaunt Street slum school form a hockey team. Kate Craddock turns out to be their star player, able to hit a hockey ball harder than any other girl. Now the Education Committee are threatening to build on their pitch. The girls draw up a petition, collect signatures, and go to the town hall to present it to the Mayor.

Kate and the team return in Cannonball Kate and the Magpies. The Magpies Hockey Club are touring the canals in a traditional narrowboat, they become involved in a match against a team of Amazons led by the Honourable Hortense Frobisher, who’s one aim is to win – no matter what.

We’ll Win Wimbledon for Wales

Plot

Elaine Morgan, robbed of a great chance of winning the ladies’ singles at Wimbledon,by a leg injury,  vows to find another Welsh girl whom she can train to win this coveted title. The girl she chooses is Linda Rees. The training takes years of patience and hard work, but now Linda is playing at Wimbledon with an outside chance of winning. Worried by trouble in the village where she lives, Linda performs poorly in her first match, but a telegram that tells her the trouble has been cleared up boosts her spirits.

The Pot Hunter

Plot:

Jean Greig a newcomer at Hartfield, Secondary Modern School, Mancaster, has helped the school to win a prized hockey trophy for the first time. It is games mistress Avis Hunter’s burning ambition to win more cups and trophies,and she makes the girls practise whenever possible. To get a break fromhockey, the girls also take up other activities.

Testing Time for Tania

Plot

Spoilt Tania Roberts is facing a stiff challenge for the first time in her life. Her grandfather has just died, leaving instructions with his lawyer that Tania will benefit under his will in one year’s time – provided that she becomes a competent long-distance swimmer before the twelve months is up.  Tania is lazy and has never been interested in any sport, but she is determined not to be deprived of her legacy, her first swimming lesson nearly makes her change her mind.testing time for tania

Odd Girl Out [1964]

Plot:

Rita Galton, who has travelled the world with her father, a consultant engineer, comes to  Oldcastle College as a pupil. Miss Blair, the headmistress, encourages team spirit and all the pupils are expected to participate in games. Rita is put in “The Oaks”, one of the four houses of the famous boarding school.  Straight away she clashes with teachers and prefects when she has her own way of doing things. She has no interest in team games, though she does like single sports like kayaking, fencing and tennis.odd girl out

Tina and the Touring Ice-Show

Plot:

Fifteen-year old Tina Westlake is in the chorus of “Fantasy on Ice”, a touring ice-show. At Torbury, Pat, the leading skater, completes her contract and leaves to join a show, going to the Far East.
